If you were a uk size 14 then you buy the pattern that covers that range of sizes. Yes it tells you on the back how much material you need and what type is suitable. I suggest cotton material or similar for a first try. You are also told any other materials you need such us buttons, zip, bias binding etc. The instruction sheet inside tells you exactly what to do including how to lay out the material on the pattern. The one thing to note is that the pattern pieces are printed with all the sizes on them so you need to cut out the size you need. If in doubt choose a larger size or trace your size (with helpful markings for darts and matching marks) - I used baking paper!
