As I type this I am nestled cozily under the covers of my bed with my surface pro 3 sitting on my brand new sofia and sam's deluxe memory foam lap desk. No longer am I shackled to my desktop. This is a great laptop desk. Sofia and Sam seemed to have thought about just about everything when they designed this slacker's table... Comfort..... definitely 5 out of 5 stars. This rests easily on my legs and does not have any awkward angles or points. I like that the part that sits on you is NOT made of those little beads. This is foam all the way. And the wrist rest is thoughtfully placed. I wish it was removable for those times when I might not want a wrist rest but I can't imagine that would happen all that often. And, the added bonus of the wrist rest is that it keeps your laptop from sliding into you lap. Size.... For me, this is perfect. The surface pro 3 has a pretty small footprint, but this desk has plenty of room even for the big boys. A 17" laptop should have no problem on this thing. five out of five stars again. Looks..... not that looks matter, but for those of you concerned about it, this thing is a real looker. I bought the one with the black cushion. I was afraid it would look drab. I think if Sofia and Sam come up with a second generation of this nifty lap desk they should consider a peripheral's compartment. But alas.... the fact that they thought of such a clever light and battery compartment makes up for the fact that they left out a little storage space. But lets not make that mistake again. So, function also gives this 5 out of 5. Whenever I am reviewing an item I try to also take into consideration the price paid. I am not going to hold a 20 dollar bluetooth speaker to the same standard as a sonos system. I will still point out pros and cons but will take price into account. The bottom is cloth. **Q: THis is for my sister in a nursing home. Is the memory foam as good as beanbag filler to position the tray straight?** A: I prefer the “beanbag” type filler, but I guess it would depend how one plans to use it. I use one (a different one I’ve used for years—looking for a new one now) while sitting in my Lay-z-Boy chair (upright, not reclined back) and put a pillow underneath to get it to the proper ergonomic height for me. For someone in a nursing home however, they might looking to use it while sitting up in bed. I would think that in such a situation, it might work best sitting on top of the bed tray (most are height adjustable), and placing this on the tray, in which case a memory foam filler would probably work best. You could place something under it if needed (I was going to suggest a phone book—but good luck finding one of those these days—ha, ha! though I have use an unopened pack of printer paper for the same purpose) to get it to the most comfortable height, and the memory foam would be your best bet for this to maintain that height and position. A bead-filled one would be constantly shifting when ever pressure is applied, and I imagine it would need repeated “adjustments”. But using a headboard or wall would do. It's comfortable on your legs. I thought the handrest would bother me, but it also keeps laptop/books from sliding.
