Review: Another enjoyable pokemon title - What can I say? It's pokemon! Before I start fanboying it needs to be said that this pokemon isn't like it's predecessors. It's easier, in fact I can't remember struggling at all. You gian xp to all your pokemon upon defeating or capturing a pokemon (you read that right, capturing now gives xp to your pokemon). There is also a very linear feel, even more so than the originals yet don't let this dissuade you too much, because the game is without a doubt a very enjoyable. There's a new battle mechanic called dynamaxing which will have a big impact on your battles, seeing pokemon in 3d is something that never gets old, they even brought out new archetypes of previous pokemon known as galarian forms. You can cook food, camp and play with your pokemon, customise your clothes, laugh at the attempt of doing the London accent, you can even see your friend in the wild zone if your both there! I could write an insane in depth review listing all the great features, but that would make for a very long read. If you liked any previous pokemon titles, I suspect you'll like this one too. New Pokèmon are featured in this release, generation 8, featuring a large roster of insightful characters, as well as galarian versions of original characters. Although, all games come with their flaws... Unfortunately there is not a full national pokedex, which I understand would dissapoint some Pokè veterans. The game also aims more towards younger children, with a very tutorial heavy beginning, not as much freedom throughout the game as I hoped for, and very easy fights. There was some connection problems when the game was first released but I assume this was just necause the serverd were a bit overwhelmed. This does not seem to be a problem anymore. Despite this, I have really enjoyed this game and look forward fo future releases and coming back to complete this game again at some point. BUT, you CAN play SOME aspects of the game - often LOCALLY, too - IF you have two (or theoretically, up to four) different Switches, each with a copy of Sword and / or Shield. It can be either. Both of you can play the same one, or you can each play a different one. What can you do together? You can travel together in the wild areas; do raids together (sometimes - it doesn't always work for us); link trade; and do Pokemon camps together. IF you buy the Expansion Pass (which I DO recommend), theoretically, you should be able to do Dynamax Adventures together in the Crown Tundra. Here's how you play together: *****Do NOT go on the internet - make sure you are set to offline / LOCAL communication. The online stuff is a mess, ime. You can toggle online / local play via the Y-Comm.***** To be in the wild area together, just go to the same area. To do a raid together, one of you goes up to the raid den and looks inside. Decide which Pokemon you want to use for the joint raid, and get them ready. Press plus (+) to set up a security code. You can use any number code, either eight digits or up to eight digits. Confirm (using the A button, I think). THEN select "Invite others", I think. Your buddy needs to check his or her Y-Comm. They may need to update the stamps to see the invite. They need to select the invite, enter the code, and confirm. They should then be able to battle with you. Remember that only one of you can dynamax. Raid notes: for joint raids, pick a Pokemon that is resistant to damage from the den Pokemon and is at an appropriate experience level. For a joint five-star raid, you may be able to use Pokemon around level 60, although I'd recommend more like level 70. To solo a five-star raid, I recommend around level 95 with strong moves. For a joint raid, the most important thing is probably that both of your Pokemon contribute to defeating the den Pokemon. Once defeated, the best balls - in my experience - are timer (in general), dusk (starting in the evening and going overnight), repeat (if you've caught one of the same species before) and net (water- and bug-types only). Promotional Pokemon tend to be harder to catch than average. The Switch's wireless communication is relatively poor, so sometimes you can join the raid, sometimes you can't. It's been annoying like that. We have had some luck inviting family members on regular raids and so far NO luck with the Crown Tundra Expansion Pass Dynamax Adventures. If your buddy can't join in, then you have the option of going in alone (with computer-generated players) or canceling the raid if the timer doesn't run out first. In addition to raids, you can also trade Pokemon using the Link Trade option on the Y-Comm. This is much safer than Surprise Trades, ime. As for joint Pokemon camps, we've had much greater success with them than with joint raids. Set up a camp in an area you can both reach. The Y-Comm will send out an invite automatically. Your buddy needs to use the Y-Comm or join manually - by coming up to the tent, and selecting to join (pressing A, I think). For best results, cook a curry consistent with your Pokemon's preferences (from their nature). Use rare berries as you can, and lots of berries. Highly recommend. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Beautiful, immersive, addictive Pokémon upgrade! *by M***N on 27 April 2020* Completed 4-5 gyms challenges so far. I was very sceptical about the Dynamaxing but it is actually visually brilliant and exciting (if not much of a gameplay/tactical necessity to a veteran Pokémon trainer). The graphics, controls, areas, designs, Pokémon themselves, animations are all staggeringly beautiful and such a distance from my first experiences with Pokémon Yellow 20+ years ago (still love the originals too though!). The only critique I have is that the team XP sharing makes the game quite easy for a veteran Pokémon trainer like myself. It would have been good to be able to switch that feature off possibly (although I love that the battling Pokémon gets experience for helping capture Pokémon which makes sense and is about time!) The story so far is quite understated and has taken a bit of a backseat which is not a problem provided it heats up later.
