18 years later this game lives up to the spirit of the Shenmue series
Shenmue is a special and unique series, and Shenmue 3 successfully lives up to that legacy. This game starts with a slow burn at the start, but once it clicks, you won't be able to put it down. The new economy system is truly engrossing and builds the mini-game and job systems from previous titles directly into the core gameplay loop. Ryo's sparring and martial arts practice make you a better fighter in battle, providing a feeling of progression and accomplishment as you move through the game. The arcade returns with titles like Whack-a-Mole, QTE title, and a fun nod to Virtua Fighter which I won't spoil here. Forklift fans can also rejoice in the return of that job, which can be taken on part time at the player's leisure. You will never be running around in Shenmue 3 bored. There's always something to do and it's all fun! The environments in this game are beautiful. Bailu Village will stun with it's natural splendor, while Niaowu is a scenic port town with detailed architecture and bustling commerce. The music is as majestic as ever, sounding even more incredible now that tracks can stream from the original compositions and not have to rely on the Dreamcast's Yamaha chip to interpret them. I would often find myself just standing in front of the Shenmue tree, just taking in the undeniable beauty of the Guilin, China setting brought to life here. Building a familiarity and friendship between our main character Ryo and the mysterious girl Shenhua is a key them of the story in this game. Conversations with her are engaging and you sense their bond growing the more time they spend together. Additionally, a big highlight for me were the phone calls to series characters that Ryo has left behind in his journey. The characterization in these phone calls is some of the best in the game and the topics of conversation were both interesting and at times hilarious (looking at you Tom Johnson). This game is a labor of love from a creator trying to please the fans of this series and attract new ones. I highly recommend it to anyone with a PS4. Thank you to Yu Suzuki for all your hard work bringing this series back to life. Now, onward to Shenmue 4!

What I wanted.
I will say this, I played the first two games, imported the second through EB Games with the conversion disc. I loved this game! For a kickstarter game with a modest budget it was amazing! With that said, I do agree with individuals that are critiquing that it should not have been $59.99. This title would have done really well at $39-49.99. As much as I loved it, the ending did leave a lot to desire, and you could tell that they ran out of time but originally wanted to flesh it out more. The game has charm and I actually like the new level up system, I just wish you could have more story battles. There was an article a while ago that advised some of money go to a plot developer, and I agree. As much as I love Shenmue, I really hope that the story is more fleshed out if it gets another game. I will definitely support another kickstarter if that is what it takes to finish the series, but I don't want to wait another 5 years. If you are into martial arts, you will love how this game forces you to shallowly understand the culture of finding a teacher to become stronger. Some people critiqued the order of things before a boss, but, that is kind of how the martial arts work. You have to continue to fail to become stronger..

Shenmue 3 still lives up to its legacy of ingenuity
A simple fun game thats relaxing to play. The music sets a nice melody with some ominous tempo as you discover new mysteries. The graphics are pretty good compared to 1 and 2 and dialogue can be funny as well but it also has poetry in it as monologues cover ancient proverbs. I also think Its for old school gamers that loved the first shenmue back in 2000 for SEGA dreamcast platform. I love the martial arts, the gambling, arcade, the tokens, pawn shops, collecting herbs, doing side missions, buying food to survive and other exquisite items. I also like how this game sets a moral compass and shows doing good deeds and always being truthful to others and being a good person and it has deep moral and value meaning in the game also. I love that there things to do in this open world game in China set back in the year 1987 in the continuation saga from Shenmue I & II. Just a fun game overall.

The Shenmue III we never got years ago, for better or worse
I've given this a 5 star review, but in spite of that, it doesn't come without caveats. This is a 5 star rating based on the game meeting my own expectations as a longtime fan of the prior two Shenmue games. Be forewarned: This is a title made on a relatively small budget by modern standards and made to feel like a direct followup to a nearly 20 year old game. Anyone who's followed the story of this games development over the last 18 years knows many of us fans were so desperate, we would have accepted a straight up Dreamcast game of it meant we got another entry in the series. While this isn't exactly that, it's not far off either. The controls are a bit stiff, the voice acting is not up to modern standards, the translation is rough, and the game's performance from a technical standpoint could definitely use some more polishing. So with all that in mind, how can I give this a five star review? Because I'm one of those gamers that would have been perfectly happy with a third Dreamcast quality entry at any point over the last 18 years of waiting. I've played and replayed Shenmue I and II many times over the years. I'm familiar with their strange, outdated design decisions. As far as meeting my expectations for a third entry went, as long as the game was up to the standards of its long ago released forebears, I was gonna be happy. Everything else was gravy as they say, so to have a decent looking by 2019 standards game that plays like a slightly updated, but not completely revised, version of the classic games, I was and am ecstatic. This game will not be for everyone. This game won't even please all Shenmue fans. Go in with your expectations adjusted accordingly. Shenmue III had already begun development way back in the day. Consider this an HD remake of a game we never actually got way back when and you may be able to appreciate it more. If you're looking for a brand new 2019 game with modern game play and quality of life enhancements on par with other modern games, prepare to be disappointed. As for myself, I couldn't be happier. Fingers crossed this will sell decently enough on its small budget that we'll be playing Shenmue IV in a few more years.

A return of a beloved franchise and about time.
I grew up playing the shenmue series it is my favorite series of all time that being said, I'm going to try to do this without the Nostalgia glasses on and this is my personal opinion, I think this game is good, but there are things that are missing from this game and it may divide people from buying this game mainly newcomers, mainly because of the slow pace but that's how this game is, so I'll just skip to the good and bad and I'll try to do this without spoiling. [the bad] the voice acting could be better they sound like how they did in shenmue 1&2, but I got a theory that they're purposely doing it that for nostalgia, some of the character models look like something from a clay animation, that goes especially for the bosses, a lot of the bosses that you fight in the game are a little disappointing shenmue 1 and 2 fans will understand none of them are bad by any means, that's all I'll say trying to avoid spoilers, some of NPC's you cannot talk it's a minor nip pic, unlike the first two, and when you are trying to find out a location it kind of takes a little bit too long for them to tell you, and when you trying to find a location when they pointed out to you the camera doesn't show you where they're pointing to you, and good luck trying to find a job in this sequel because they took out the option to ask a person where you can find a job or where to gamble, you literally have to look for it, and the throw moves are gone so say goodbye to the machine gun fist, that is what I mean by things missing from this, [The good] I'm not going to lie the graphics look good not the best and there could be more attention to details but you got to remember they are running on a lower budget, hopefully when this succeeds Sega needs to get their heads out of their asses and help instead of working on the same franchises, the combat at first I didn't think I liked it but I actually do like it, this is an unpopular opinion I just wished the combat wasn't catering towards the new crowd, because it is, I liked the Virtua Fighter style of fighting that was in the first two, but it's still has shenmue combat feel once you get used to it, you can still look ins and outs of drawers closets and look at items even though you can't turn your hands to look at the side of the back of the items you holding this time around, the story is still good in my opinion it goes even deeper I'm just going to leave it as that, and the main man Corey Marshall is back as Ryo hazuki, if you are new to the franchise I will highly recommend you pick up, or if you're not comfortable enough at least rent the shenmue 1 and 2 collection please get that first before getting the third game in order to really keep up with the story and the experience, and also what you got to keep in mind, this is a slow-paced game it's not like the fast-paced action games that's out, you have to take your time and the action will come to you, this game is meant to be a journey with a lot of realistic elements implanted into it, and its main focus is this story so please try to keep that in mind.

OMG i cant believe it
I sure cant believe that shenmue 3 is a real life game after 16 years of waiting or the story to continue and also a possabily of shenmue 4,6,7,8,9,10 and 11. The producer of the series just stated of were are more interested with wanting to see more sequels, Then its all about the sales from Shemue 3. The game is so beautiful in graphics and also it keep the same nastalgic stand point feeling of the old school dream cast games of Shenmue 1 & 2. The game play is really nice and smooth and if you're a trust fan of this series then you know what you're in for. Its your boy Straight up with you from the Youtube. This is no modern day shenmue 3 game is dont go in thinking that for you new fans of the series. The game also features a back incaping video from the story from part one and two and i will catch the new comers up to speed into Shenmue 3 as well.
