Demetri and Alyssa are learning to rebuild themselves

*by T***0 on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on December 12, 2022*

Both of them have scars. Both of them have sorrow and pain in their pasr that they're trying to work thru. Demetri is a rock star with all the infous bad ha it's that come with it. But he's trying to stay sober and work thru the loss h s experienced. Alyssa is a local girl, trying to pick up the pieces after her high school boyfriend dies in a car accident and she couldn't save him.On paper, they're a terrible mix, both hurting and rebuilding their lives. But in reality, there's no one better for either of them, if they can find a way to reconcile their pain and move forward together.

    Better than the 1st?

I do believe I liked Pull more than Tear. Probably due in large part because it's not a love triangle. I'm just one of those weirdos that doesn't really love those.I also think the writing got better as the book went on. And I think I also like that it's not a stand alone book. It does bring up (important) stuff from the last book but doesn't make us hash through it for a 2nd time. And I fell head over heels for Demetri. Do you love it when the leading male fights for the girl he loves no matter how hard she runs away trying to fight her demons on her own? Then this is the book for you! Demetri grew by leaps and bounds and I loved watching who he was becoming. And he still had his witty personality that provided lots of laughter. And I liked Alyssa. Took me a while to warm to her. Because while I did love her sarcastic personality, I may have been overdone by the "I'm going to run away from the perfect man so that I can be alone in my suffering" type of character in the books I've read recently. But working through her grief and the surprises along her discovery helped me to have compassion for her. I grew to love her and Demetri together.I think the author did a great job with Demetri's point of view. I've come to a place where I cringe when books have lots of crying males. And I'll admit... I got a little nervous with this one. But no need, because I think this is a great example to show that it's totally ok (and great) for men to cry and yet not be chicks about it. I don't know that I'm explaining it well, but there are times you can hear the female author behind a male POV and I didn't here. I enjoyed Demetri. And I can't wait to hear more from him. There was one part in this book that when it was 1st revealed I thought it was cheesy (sorry!). But over time I was won over and turns out it's the whole reason for the 3rd book. Ha- whoops. Glad it won me over. ;) I'm looking forward to seeing what happens. There are some editing booboos like practically every single ebook out now. And those don't bug me. But there was one little part where in the midst of Alyssa's POV we get an accidental sentence from Demetri's POV.But seriously... the book is 99 cents so I say get over and read on. ;)

    Emotionally Draining

*by T***R on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on March 8, 2013*

This story was heavier than the first one as it dealt A LOT with grief and regret. While it was well informed and sensitive, it was hard to find the love story between Demetri and Alyssa when Alyssa's previous boyfriend Brady was such a great guy. Every time Alyssa went back in time to a memory with Brady, I fell more in love with him and swooned. No, he was not perfect but neither is Demetri and sweet Alyssa deserves true love. I could definitely see why it was so hard for her to move on. Honestly, it was very depressing. The story starts off with the rock star, Demetri, getting a lowly job at the taffy shop which required masses amount of REALLY SUSPENDING BELIEF! Demetri, crushed by a broken heart, drug addiction and reckless driving, is trying to turn his life around with the help of his therapist and closest friends. He wants the consuming love his brother has with Natalee, but feels he has used up his one chance at true love when his girlfriend died in a car accident. Natalee talks him into a common job working at the taffy shop because he has no inspiration to write songs. While there, he meets the competition in the form of Alyssa, the beautiful, sarcastic girl who was not charmed by who he is and becomes his muse. Thus begins their love story: "What if you take the one part of me that's finally started to breathe without crying?" - Alyssa"No. I won't leave you alone. I won't abandon you. I'm sure as hell not going to listen to you, and you can damn well know that I'm going to fight for you". - DemetriBoth Alyssa and Demetri have suffered loss and, I am not going to lie, the grief sessions at Demetri's house made me tear up. There were these flash backs of Alyssa and her boyfriend Brady that were so sweet, that the loss hurt that much more. It was hard to read. The whole book was emotionally draining and, while many will find this romantic, it is not my type of story. Was it as good as Tear? Well, not really; it was definitely emotional, but not as romantic or filled with good drama, just sadness. At least it didn't have a stupid love triangle, I really hate those. You could really tell a female was writing Demetri's thoughts and it was a little lame sometimes because, as he confesses himself, he was really acting like a girl. Some confusion on story integrity: Demetri claims to be both nineteen and eighteen in the book which is it? Also, how hard all these kids fell in love at such a young age (15) - it is so Romeo and Juliet. And Alec and Nat's relationship sure got boring - where'd their spice go? It's too early for the honeymoon to be over! And his reveal to Demetri that he might have got another girl in trouble was just wrong on so many levels. Apparently book 3, Shatter, will be written from Alec's POV and will strain his relationship with Nat as AD2 becomes REALITY TV.Rachel Van Dyken is an entertaining writer who always keeps me turning the pages, and even though this one was too heavy for me, I will definitely be purchasing book 3! Her stories are definitely YA, not New Adult, but for .99, it is a STEAL.No Swearing or sex; but there was intense kissing, drug and alcohol use and sleepoversWould I/Did I buy it? Yes (.99)Would I read it again? ProbablyWould I recommend it to friends? Yes
