They are made of hardened nylon resin. They're light weigh and easy to use, just release the latch and then latch it back down, but do watch where your fingers are placed so you don't pinch them. They may be nylon but it will hurt if you put your fingers in the wrong place. They held up to the deadlift with slight dropping of the weight although I would not suggest a straight drop or the plates will go flying even with the collars on. But they are strong enough for average lifting force.
