They are colorful - Thrilled to have tried this series; wish I'd found it sooner! My son and daughter started with these at the 2nd and 4th grade level. Now he's in the 3rd grade book and she's in the 5th grade book. Wish we'd started at the Pre-K level though! They are great. They are colorful, instructions are clear and the pages aren't overloaded with boring repetition. As a homeschooling mom in a state with very loose regulation, I feel good having my kids go through these books as a supplement and record of some of what we do. We do a TON of life-learning and hands-on activities, tons of art/music/theater and many field trips. I don't keep detailed records of our hands-on and life-learning because I'm not required to, and I don't feel like it'd be a good use of time. But I still like seeing these books completed as we finish them and I'm saving them to show the kids what they've accomplished. And as a reminder that we've got the basics covered well. We use Real Science 4 Kids and Trail Guide to Learning for science and social studies (covers some Language Arts and Science also) and we take a unit approach to those two, which means we don't work in them every single day. We use Teaching Textbooks Math daily, in addition to the math in these worktexts. I like being able to have the kids do Brain Quest in addition to our other activities and they typically enjoy BQ and find it fun. I do wish BQ would beef up the social studies and science sections of the books. They are the most fun and also the shortest. Then the kids run out of science and social studies and are left with tons of math, reading, spelling, etc. and it feels a little unbalanced. Other than that, these are perfect and I'll keep buying them. Currently hoping BQ might publish some beyond 6th grade. I'd buy them!! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Content heavy and kid approved *by P***M on November 10, 2008* I ordered this after seeing the fourth grade book in a local bookstore. My daughter is in 3rd grade, the store was out of that level, so I came to Amazon. I originally was interested mainly in the math section, as she has struggled in that area and, so far, it has really helped. The activities have been a good a match for her school curriculum: evens and odds, addition and subtraction with regrouping up to 3 digits, rounding, multiplication and division, fractions and decimals, measurement, time and money, and word problems. There are other one page and two page exercises thrown in (graphs and charts, lines, signs, etc.) that have been helpful, as well. We follow BrainQuest as she moves through her curriculum and it definitely helps. What has pleasantly surprised me is how great the other content areas of the book are. When she was struggling with alphabetical order and dictionary skills, the BQ Workbook had activities for her. When she had a test on common and proper nouns, the BQ Workbook had a page we could use as test review. When she needed more study on main ideas, topic sentences, and supporting details, the BQ Workbook had activities for us to use. When she was studying the human body or the US Constitution or animal habitats or maps ... this Workbook has not yet disappointed. The absolute best thing about this Workbook is that my child (age 8) *asks* to use it. She thinks it's fun. When she's "bored" either at home or in the car, she'll turn to this Workbook. I really cannot recommend this highly enough.
