Review: TR-002 - Good Quality enclosure - I bought the TR-002 enclosure to use for RAID 1. Likes: - USB3.1 Gen 2 10Gbps interface (TR-002 model). Note: TR-004 model uses **USB 3.0** interface. - QNAP External RAID Manager is great. User interface is intuitive and easy to use for RAID management: - creating/rebuilding RAID array (I did test RAID 1 rebuilding. It worked great) - checking RAID status - reading S.M.A.R.T data from each individual drive - updating enclosure firmware. The latest firmware version is 1.0.4 (as of 01/19/2020) - Good sequential read/write 229/227 Mega BYTES/second from Seagate BarraCuda 3.5" 7200 rpm SATA drives. - Reliable. I have been using the enclosure in RADI 1 configuration for 3 months without any problem. - Automatic standby when PC is shutdown/hibernated. System status LED flashes ever 2 seconds in standby mode. - Quiet cooling fan. Temperatures of 2 7200rpm drives reported by S.M.A.R.T were 40C (ambient temp was 26C) - Supports 2.5" and 3.5" drives. - Drive mounted on a drive tray with drive label face up so it's easy to visually checked drive spec. Dislikes (minor): - Drive status LED is flashing green for both read and write accesses. It would be better to use different colors like flashing yellow for READ, flashing RED write, and solid green for idle. - Though fan is quite, fan speed is not variable based on drive temp.
Review: Great device if you want to lose data - Bought this device because of the Individual drive mode and other reviews mentioning how great the device is. Setup is NOT easy – the instructions are NOT clear on how to setup the Modes. I will say that the device itself is nice – even though most components are plastic – nothing feels flimsy or not good quality. Other reviews mention that you can setup the device in Individual Mode and use drives that already have data on them. In my experience, this is NOT the case. I dropped in a drive that had housed backups and other important data, and it couldn't be read by the TR-002 in Individual Mode. I connected the drive using my old enclosure and it's now the drive is corrupted and unreadable by my Mac.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Don't know of a better option right now? Needs more robustness. Fast.
*by D***R on October 10, 2020*

Software works and you can see SMART status of each disk which is improvement over Vantec NexStar MX. You need some warning of failures so this is good. I installed SMART test disks I pulled from the Vantec to see what the QNAP would do with them. It recognized the RAID 1 markers and immediately considered it a RAID 1 array. This was with the DIPs in "software control" mode as it comes from the factory. This is unfortunate as I intentionally deleted the partition on one of the drives and I gave the Vantec a bad review because it didn't detect that. But the QNAP doesn't either. I want a RAID array that rebuilds errors and which gives a sense of robustness. Seatools doesn't recognize it, same as with the Vantec. I'm already getting the feeling that this is based on the same chipset as the Vantec. Aha yes. Victoria tells me "JMicron H/W Raid 1", same as the Vantec. However, it's telling me that it's SATA3 and that SMART is enabled, which are both improvements over the vantec. So it looks like a $95 premium over the Vantec buys you those features, and also you can remove drives without unscrewing the box (which I don't really care about TBH). HOWEVER! CrystalDiskInfo gives me no SMART Info. So it looks like it's lying about being SMART enabled. You can get the individual SMART status of each disk via the QNAP software, but there's no Hardware compiling of the two SMART data sets into one SMART data set for the box and passing that on as a SMART data set, which is what I was hoping for, so that the OS and the computer would make any problem super clear. And it's also lying about the rotation rate. It's telling me 7200RPM, when one of my disks is 5400RPM. OK so scratch SMART as an improvement over the Vantec, but you do have the QNAP software, so I have to run another app in the background but I have a bit more information about when a disk might fail. Would vastly prefer a real hardware SMART implementation. Speed: 145MB/s through about 7ft of USB 3.0 cable. Probably maxed out the HD nice. Much better than the Vantac which would only do about half that. Probably because the Vantec was stuck on SATA2. Adding another 10ft of USB 3.0 cable to make 17ft total did not slow it down. (Cable Matters cable) Adding a USB 3.0 Anker Hub (model A7516), slowed it down to 35-40MB/s. The speed with the hub was good on 7ft of cable, but not with 17ft. OK the speed alone is worth the extra $95. 3.9 stars. Really want better SMART info. Also really want a RAID setup that detects general errors such as a RAID 1 array not actually being a mirror data set. Is that an unreasonable requirement? I don't have a sense that this is robust. I tried updating the firmware to the latest but nothing I'm concerned about was fixed. Be careful with the drive slides. The plastic feels weak. Should be OK with a LOT of care, but it definitely feels like a home use item. A lot of users will break these. The drive slides look like they've been copied from the old Cineraid slides, but less metal, more plastic. I tried a drive with a known SMART error and the QNAP software did pass the error on. You just need to keep that app running. I wish Cineraid still made RAID arrays. Those were nice units but they were limited at 3TB. 3.9 stars.
