With my Surface Pro (not 2) I was not able to get sound over this adapter, even though both mini Display Port and HDMI support that. I don't know if that's a limitation of the Surface Pro or not. I tested the item with my new 256GB Surfacepro2. I played a movie on the SP2 and then plugged in the miniport adapter.I then plugged in a 4' HDMI cable which was connected to my Sony HDTV directly rather than through my Onkyo receiver. Everything worked perfectly and the adapter passed both sound and video. Sound was quite loud too even when not passing through the receiver. Should work well with a hotel TV one assumes. One final note, it is easy to plug the mini port into the surface pro2 the wrong way round and then it does not work.
