For a tank on the smaller side there really isn't a better choice. Ideal for my bettas. Doesn't hinder their swimming in any way, but keeps the water healthy and clean. I use one cartridge for 4-6 weeks, rinsing any solid debris in the water taken from their tanks in a weekly water change. Rinsing the dust and saturating the sponge of a new cartridge in the old water from a cleaning. The casing is surprisingly more durable than it looks, I know because occasionally I take the sponge from a used cartridge out to cycle a new tank and it takes some work. I do partial water changes every 2 weeks. Are you asking if it works with a tank that hold 1/2 gallon? (0.5) If so, I would say NO. It is too strong for such a small space. Also, betta's should be kept in a MINIMUM 2.5; but 5 gal. or more is optimal, with heater and filter. **Q: I forgot to rinse it before installing it and all this white stuff came out-- is that okay? I'm only running it right now to cycle the tank (no fish.)** A: Hey Kristy, Thanks for your question. The white stuff you're seeing is just dust particles from the filter media. It won't have any negative effect on your tank. Just let it continue to cycle and all of the particles will be picked back up by the filter. **Q: How long is this filter and does it provide mechanical filtration?** A: It is about 4" long and works very well by pushing air/water through the filter material and charcoal. A good investment for small tank. (1-2) Gallon) Have been using one for about 15 years. Good product!! **Q: Will this work for a round bowl? No flat sides on mine** A: It can just lay on the bottom out of the way if your bowl is big enough. I have a little tank and just leave it without the suction cups and it works fine. You could also get a small sponge filter for your bowl. They both need an air pump to work and are about the same cost. Most have heavy duty filters. I bought a little betta and I felt his tank needed a filter. Bought one at the store and bought the cartridges here. Came very quickly---- in about 5 days.
