    A CHILDREN'S PICTURE ADULTS CAN ENJOY

When Roald Dahl names a sympathetic character Miss Honey, we know he’s having us on. He pushes both good and evil to satirical extremes. What he’s satirizing are childhood fears and fantasies. The British reserve of his narrative style points up the absurdity but also underscores what the stories demonstrate: that bad situations can be manageable if you just trust yourself and keep your wits and know better than to believe Miss Trunchbull’s low opinion of you. Danny De Vito’s brightly colored movie version of Matilda sustains the rampant exaggeration but also achieves its own form of understatement. He does a subtle, impressive job of keeping Miss Honey (Embeth Davidtz) at least as unreal as Matilda and Miss Trunchbull. (It’s a nice touch that Miss Honey’s coolly modulated line readings sound as if she finds Matilda maybe a little bit intimidating.) This movie, with its glorious overstatement, is also a work of fine discretion. It never gets sticky. It’s a children’s picture that doesn’t treat children like fools, and that adults can enjoy too.
