I'm new to timber framing, but thought this would come with a 25 degree bevel. I always sharpen my chisels with a 25 initial bevel and go with a 30 deg for the edge. This has a 30 deg bevel, so I went with about a 33 for the edge. All I have are water stones, so I wasn't going to spend hours taking this to 25. The backside has a nice concave surface to guarantee a nice flat cutting edge. To get a better answer get on youtbe and look up wranglerstar timber framing chesils. He does a complete break down about them. **Q: What is the length from working edge to the hammer end and is there a beveled side version available too?** A: I believe the 286 is the beveled version??? somewhere around 15" **Q: How thick is the 1 1/2" chisel? 3/8"?** A: the thickness tapers down from 3/8 at the base of the handle down to1/4 near the end. Excellent value! **Q: can i get it engraved purchasing it through Amazon** A: That was an option that I did not see when ordering this framing chisel but the chisel looks very rugged. I am sure that you could order a branding iron with your initials on it thru Amazon. It sharpens up well and quite easily and holds its edge too. Very satisfied with this and a 2" chisel I recently purchased. I will say though, I use this 1 1/2" more often, it's much easier to maneuver. I think If I had to do it all over again, I would go with the 1 1/2" chisel and a 2" Slick.
