Core Classic Outdoor Watch for Men

I bought this watch to replace a 10+ year old Suunto Vector. I expected Suunto quality and features to match or exceed the Vector. The reality is that there are more features than I expected. For 1 the screen can be brightened or darkened . The face is cleaner, seems bigger, and is more customizable than before. The watch is very clean looking wand no as thick and clunky as the one it replaced. The critical features are still there, e.g., compass, altimeter,, barometer, and alarm. And best of all the price is relatively the same as the Vector was but in cheaper 2026 dollars. Highly recommended.

Great all around watch outdoors. I've had Suu to watches for over 25 years. They last me 3 years due to hard use.

I has the possitive display version several years ago. I wore that watch everyday for 4 or 5 years before moving on to a smart watch. I am not a smart watch kind of guy. I have a Garmin Fenix 5x I use for working out to keep track of heart rate and such. When I am at work I needed a practical watch that did not have to be charged all the time. I went back to Suunto based on my possitive experience before. My brother still wears my old watch. The only change from my first is the band. It is softer and has no break in period. I prefer this softer band. I also chose the all black version since it looks cleaner than a big white face. I was worried it would be hard to read. I did have to adjust the contrast from the standard setting of 7, up to 10. The contrast setting goes from 1 to 13. A quick Google search will show you how to adjust the contrast, it is not in the standard menu setting. It was easy to follow the instructions on the suunto web page. The build quality is just as good as my original and I fully expect it to provide me service for years to come. Batteries last me 12-14 months. I have the back light to turn on with any key push and I keep the button tones turned on. The only setting I keep off is the storm alert. I turn that on when I am camping or hiking only. Some people may care to know, this watch does not have a split lap stop watch. I know it is important for some to have this feature but I have never needed that sort of function. The other down side is it only has 1 alarm. Again I have never had a need for more than one alarm, I know some people need that function. I was really hesitant to buy the negative display, but I am sure glad I did. It streamlines the look of this watch. I can see why this is the most popular Suunto watch they sell since it was introduced. If you are on the fence, just buy it. You will be happy you did. On a final note. When I change my batteries, I always change it with a new rubber O-ring. I put a VERY VERY small amount of silicone grease on the O-ring prior to installing the new battery. It may be overkill but I never had any leaking or water resistance issues. The O-rings are cheap to buy. I like how Suunto trusts its consumers enough to swap out their own batteries! Fantastic watch. And the price it is now on Amazon, snag one up before the broke hikes back up.

***UPDATED***First Review:I recently had a malfunction: the stopwatch function “froze” and I can’t reset or get out of the “time” mode. I just checked and am beyond the Amazon return window (purchased in May, return window expired in June…it’s now late July). I’ve read a ton of reviews that say the company doesn’t stand behind their product. The jury is still out in my case so let’s see how they respond. I’m not going to mention my occupationS or experience, that is reserved for review #2 after I see how they respond. For the record, I also own an MC-2 Compass (made by the same company) and it’s world renowned, so I have high hopes they do the right thing. We shall see, more to come. July 23, 2022Review #2 (September 18, 2022):It’s a good watch! I’m in Law Enforcement (Highway Patrol & Marine Unit), so I NEEDED a good watch. This one is hard to read at night (small numbers/characters and low backlight brightness), the included “Quick Guide” (all FOUR of them) only tell a small part of the story of this watch. To fully understand its capabilities and how to use it effectively, you’ll need that quick guide and all 33-pages of the user manual that you’ll have to download from their website. When I said “and”, I literally mean you need them BOTH (photo attached) to understand how to use all of the functions because neither does an effective job explaining how the thing works!I’m my first review I mentioned a malfunction. Well, it ended up being operator error on my part because I literally didn’t understand that it had gone into locked mode AND I couldn’t see the teeny, tiny little padlock icon that said it was in locked mode! Did I mention it’s hard to see/read? That became even more challenging because I had accidentally changed the language to something other than English and what little chance I had to recover was totally gone once it changed to some other language.If you wear glasses, be sure to use them whenever you’re setting or using anything other than the most basic functions (cycling through date, sunrise/sunset, stopwatch, timer, compass, altimeter, barometer). The user interface isn’t user-friendly or even intuitive so prepare to start memorizing which buttons perform which function when you’re doing anything other than cycling through available menus.Again, it’s a good watch…very good even! I returned it for repair and they promptly returned it with the explanation that I didn’t know how to use it (those are my words, they were much more polite and professional…thanks to them for that!)I was so frustrated when it was stuck in locked mode that I bought an Ironman (100m waterproof model) on-sale for $39.95. I can actually read and manipulate its functions at night, without reading glasses and the buttons are ultra-intuitive!!!! Sure it doesn’t have a compass, altimeter or barometer but for a basic rugged watch you can see (even at night without glasses or a magnifying glass), it’s kinda hard to beat since I swim often and waterproofing really matters. This Suunto cost $125 on Amazon and it’s a better watch than the Ironman I just mentioned simply because of its highly advanced capabilities. Just be prepared to do a ton of learning to use it effectively and efficiently in the field!I give the Suunto Core All Black a solid 4-Stars for quality, aesthetics, capabilities, and durability. The manual(s), display readability, and intuitive user interface all SUCK but I’m only going to dock them 1-Star for all of those because they should be easily correctable. …it’s a very good watch!

I've only had it a week (early March 2021), and looking at a lot of reviews it wasn't without a little trepidation that I bought it, but I wanted something tough and feature packed in my work as a lineman rigger and the price was unbeatable for what I had been told was an amazing watch for people in my field.A few slight negatives to bear in mind before you put down your money, outdoors in daylight, the display is excellent, but inside in somewhat subdued lighting its not so easy to read, it does have a nice green backlight that works similarly to a G-Shock illuminator though. The crystal is domed on the outside, giving it a degree of magnification, but it's extremely reflective and you'll find yourself angling your wrist from time to time to keep it from glaring and stopping you from reading the time in daylight. If you can live with those things and you need it's functions, or just enjoy crazy watches that are feature rich, you should get this one.The features are amazing, and very accurate, I know how far I've climbed at a glance and I can see if the air pressure drops far enough for me to not get caught in a high wind situation. Two pieces of info that we do have access to, but is extremely useful to have on your wrist giving you real time information. It can be life and death in this game.The battery will probably die well within a year, but I don't have any issue with that due to the features and the ease at which you can change the battery. There are many videos online telling you how to do this correctly, I think some of the problems that people have with waterproofing are due to a botched battery replacement. I will probably never wear this watch in the water, though I do like the idea of its depth gauge. However 30m resistance is not what I personally consider something I'd trust. Just the act of swimming can exert pressures similar to that depth and I see people killing their watches that tout the same depth by swimming in a pool, showering and taking a bath with them. Soap, chlorine and other detergents are not any watches friend.Like I said, if I run into any issues, I'll update this review, but I can't really foresee much to go wrong at this point. Look after your equipment and it'll look after you. Go easy, folks.

I received one with misaligned bezel, not too bad, but still shouldn't pass quality control. It bugs me, but won't drive me nuts as it is still usable. Features & configurations are great & the rest of the watch is ok. Display visibility is so-so, suffers a lot in low light condition. Backlight is good, seems like brighter than the older ones or maybe just my feeling. Two extra strap keepers included in the box for peace of mind. Will try to update this review after long term use. 3 stars for now.UPDATE:Watch returned, time keeping was very erratic & unpredictable, from -15s to -30s per day, not per month, PER DAY! And it's a quartz watch which supposedly be used outdoor for adventure in challenging environment, hot-cold & in between. Totally unacceptable. Just when I started to like the watch...If you buy this particular model, make sure to check if the accuracy is within tolerance, I was expecting something like +/- 0.3 spd like most other quartz, oh well, 1 star it is.

The Suunto core.. this thing is really tough. My job entails heavy metal, sharp edges, getting hit, by accident, regularly by tools and things. Its been 7 years and my first core is still completely like new, I bought a replacement because I just Have-to have a core like the one I bought years ago and once it finally does fail Ill be able to pop this out of the box and still have the most favorite watch Ive ever owned. Im sure business minds will phase out this model sometime.As for scratches, just a small amount of black paint missing.. and I mean like a hairs thickness wide in no more than 3 places.. Its really hard for me to believe. The glass really has NO scratches.Now follow me, I try to NOT scratch my watch, I take care if Im going to work on something where obviously emery cloth will scratch the hell out of the face or bezel. But hey it happens, and you just go.. damn it! when you hit it or scratch somthing against it.. But when I expected a huge scratch I had to look close.. and I mean many times of saying Damn it!.. Something about how the bezel is shaped really helps deflect the hits I guess..Ive heard many people moan about the battery life... And NOW IM GOING TO BLOW A GASKET>>.. please morons... read the manuals. OR.. use your heads..The watch is a LARGE FACE WATCH... So guess what.. IT HAS A "LOCK" feature so inadvertent button presses will not turn the light on or change the settings..Take the watch... push it forward toward your fingers.. now cock your wrist up or down fully. you WILL press a button most likely.. If you press the lock function and check for the little padlock symbol to appear in the top center of the dial you will see battery life that all watches enjoy..If you have a core that "Really uses batteries" good for you,.. Im glad your keeping the watch battery factories smiling.. My core in seven years has had maybe 3 batteries. And I overuse the compass and light.My watches prior to this have never lasted more than 3 years. Im a licensed diver too.. so Ive tried the tracer and luminox dive watches. I really liked them too and I do have a Tawatec tritium watch I switch out from time to time.. also a great watch for sure albeit non-digital.The cores compass works flawlessly, the arrow for barometric changes has worked great from the start. Arrow points up I know its going to be nice, flat arrow means more of the same, and down means pay attention to your weather.While diving it have worked perfectly too. If your tech savy, or not this watch is slim, just the right diameter, isnt HUGE, its bigger than first gen luminox, but Im just average and it looks like a spendy and not trendy workhorse. I see lots and lots of military and police using these. My job put me in their presence daily.The functions are just like the directions say and no real reviewing needs to be done, if you want someone to explain the alarm or chono its below my tolerance level to do that. Scrolling around the different settings is not hard, you just use the center button to get started and if you need help watch a youtube vid of setting one up..These watches are really really worth the hype, or Ill just say they are worth ME hyping them up. I dont ask anyone to look at anything that hasnt really really delivered on its promises.. And this really does. If you like the looks of this watch, youll be sold once its on your wrist.Just lock the display so you can enjoy it working like its suppose to, for the amount of battery life its suppose to have.Cheers.

Typical Suunto, if there is such thing. This is my second Suunto and so no surprises on my part. Well built, quite rugged and all around easy to wear. This is a larger watch but not ridiculously large. I like larger watches so that does not bother me. Easy to read even at dusk. Backlight is a bit dicky (can't quite explain best look it up on YouTube). That's definitely not something I like or appreciate about this watch. Still, it is a fairly easy watch to read even in low light conditions so I can see past that. Certainly not regretting adding it to my collection of watches.

Excellente montre. A eu des soucis au début de fiabilité (susceptible à courant statique) corrigé depuis. Par rapport a une vector on gagne les heures de lever et coucher de soleil, et un affichage de l'historique du baromètre sous forme de graphique. En montagne, on récupère une alarme de tempête (perte de plus de 4 Hp sur 1 ou 2 heures). Comme on peut en altitude passer de ciel dégagé à couvert et pluie forte ou de grêle en moins d'une heure, c'est utile pour se protéger à temps. Disposer de l'heure de coucher permet de faire son campement pendant qu'il fait jour, et de ne pas s'amuser a monter une tente ou un hamac dans le noir.Attention au changement de la pile : si on veut pouvoir continuer à plonger avec la montre (qui contient un profondimètre fonctionnant jusqu'à -10 M) il faut acheter le kit Suunto comprenant une pile et un joint neuf. Si vous ne plongez pas avec, pas besoin de changer le joint (disons pas à chaque changement de pile, mais après quelques changements de pile). Si vous ne changez pas le joint, il faut acheter du lubrifiant à base de silicone, en mettre sur le bout de son doigt, et l'étaler sur le joint sous la forme d'une très fine pellicule avant de replacer le joint dans la montre (regardez le canal Youtube de la marque Suunto, ils ont une vidéo qui montre comment on change une pile sur ce modèle).Il ne faut jamais toucher la pile de remplacement avec les mains, car elles sont conductrices, et feront perdre plusieurs mois de charge à la pile. Il faut donc manipuler la pile avec un gant en latex ou un bout de sopalin pour l'installer dans la montre. Quand on retire l'ancienne, on utilise un objet non metallique comme un cure dent en bois, et surtout rien qui ne soit en métal (court-circuits garantis dans la montre autrement, qui sera abîmée).Très belle, excellente évolution par rapport au module Vector. Le module Vector peut subir bien plus de dégâts et continuer à fonctionner, donc si vous prévoyez de l'escalade ou des chocs, une Vector sera plus solide. Pour de l'alpinisme au-delà de 2000 m, je prendrais la Core plutôt que la Vector. Une pile de rechange glissée dans un coin au cas où.Elle est belle, surtout en affichage noir. Je n'ai jamais eu de souci de lecture de l'affichage, et on peut régler le contraste sur ce modèle (on ne peut pas le faire sur une Vector). Sur Internet on trouve la doc pour entrer dans le menu de maintenance, qui permet de modifier le contraste au-dela des valeurs prévues par la doc au besoin.Si vous ne manipulez pas la pile de rechange avec un contact direct de la peau des doigts, et utilisez un petit cure-dent pour extraire l'ancienne, pas de souci. Il est recommandé de changer la pile pour une neuve avant de partir en expédition plutôt que d'avoir à jouer des doigts engourdis en altitude si la pile vient à faiblir.Une très bonne évolution par rapport à la Vector, mais un peu plus fragile vis à vis des chocs. L'écran d'une Vector est en plastique rayable, il encaisse plus, par contre une Vector aura après 5 ou 10 ans l'écran bien rayé bien que fonctionnelle. La Core dispose d'un écran minéral qui ne se raye pas facilement : même des chocs directs dessus ne laissent aucune rayure. Mais d'expérience, je ne lui ferais pas subir les mauvais traitements que j'ai pu faire subir à mes Vector (me jetter au sol, la montre percutant le sol avec moi ou bien escalader à main nues arbres et parfois, la montre frottant un peu partout rayant plastique et écran de la Vector).Bracelet confortable, qui a été amélioré il y a peu de temps au niveau de la petite pièce qui tient la languette : elle était trop dure à retirer ou déplacer, et ils ont corrigé en rabotant de moitié le renfoncement qui frotte sur la languette du strap.On trouve sur Amazon ou Ebay très facilement des écrans de protection qui se collent sur l'écran si vous craignez pour ce dernier des rayures. Mais vous n'aurez ce souci qu'avec la Vector. Pour ma part, je pense qu'il faut posséder une Vector et Core. La Vector en version HR (Heart Rate) pour surveiller son niveau cardiaque et le travailler entre 70 et 90 % de son niveau maxi pour augmenter sa capacité cardiaque, et une Core qu'on attache sur son sac en fonction altimètre, réglée depuis un point d'altitude connu, alarme de tempête activée et dont on utilise cette fonction, l'altimètre et les heures de lever/coucher en randonnée en montagne. La Core est particulièrement à l'aise en montagne.

Vorneweg: Nein, die Suunto Core all black ist nicht perfekt, aber was / wer ist das schon. Es ist eine Illusion zu glauben, irgendetwas könnte uns Menschen 100% zufriedenstellen. Wenn wir zufrieden wären, hätten wir erst gar nicht das Bedürfnis, überhaupt etwas zu kaufen oder darauf zu sparen, sondern wären Selbstversorger.Meine Produktrezension soll sich den Stärken der Suunto zum Vorschein widmen. Natürlich lasse ich die Schwächen nicht außer Acht und erkläre zum Schluss, weshalb diese Uhr 5 Sterne von mir bekommt.Die negativen Aspekte in manchen Rezensionen kann ich nachvollziehen. Das Armband sieht nach kurzer Zeit abgegriffen aus und wird wohl auch nicht allzu lange halten. Außerdem wirkt die Lünette nicht ganz fest; man kann sie zu beiden Seiten ungefähr einen zu 1/4 mm eindrücken und hört dann ein leises Knacken. Das Ganze ist wohl der Offshore-Politik von der Suunto-Vorstandschaft gefordert, die ihre Produktion überwiegend nach Fernost verlagert hat. Heutzutage wird nahezu alles in Fernost produziert - schlecht sein muss es deshalb noch lange nicht. So wie ein Skoda noch in den 1990er-Jahren noch keinen sonderlich guten Ruf hatte, wird er heute ohne Nachzudenken mit einem Volkswagen verglichen. Richtigen "Schrott" gibt es wohl heutzutage nur noch sehr selten. Aber die Suunto kauft man ja auch nicht bei KiK oder Tedi. Nun zurück zu den Makeln. Für mich sind das keine. Ich brauche keine Spaltmaße wie in der Raumfahrttechnik, sondern eine funktionierende Uhr, die verspricht, was sie hält - und das tut sie absolut. Natürlich hätte man das Armband und Gehäuse etwas robuster machen können, so dass man nicht jedes Jahr für 50€ Ersatz besorgen muss. Dann kann man mit der Uhr aber auch nur in die Berge gehen und sie nicht im Alltag tragen. Ich akteptiere es wie es ist und reibe das Armband vorsichtig mit Olivenöl ein. Das schützt und konserviert. Natürlich ist das für viele keine Option und mag sich lächerlich anhören. Ich persönlich kann das alles verschmerzen.Wer sich über die mangelnde Ausdauer der Batterie beklagt, der sollte bedenken, dass diese Uhr ein Computer ist, der ununterbrochen Messleistung zu vollbringen hat. Man würde sich viel mehr aufregen, wenn man die Sensoren zuschalten müsste und dann im Gebirge von einem Unwetter überrascht wird. Und da sind wir auch schon bei den Sensoren. Diese leisten absolut Spitzenarbeit. Es ist ganz logisch, dass der Temperaturfühler ungenau ist, wenn die Uhr am Handgelenk getragen wird. Casio löst das zugegebenermaßen etwas eleganter mit ihren Sensoren auf der Außenseite der Uhr. Aber zur Kontrolle beim Zelten (am Gestänge) oder bei einer Rast, bei der man die Suunto abnimmt, reicht dieses Gadget allemal und ist noch dazu sehr genau. Erst heute wurde ich außerdem in meinem Wohnzimmer von der Sturmwarnung meiner Suunto überrascht. Natürlich muss man die Witterung / Jahreszeit bedenken und sich dann nicht wundern, wenn anstatt eines Wolkenbruchs plötzlich Schnee daherkommt. Die Suunto piepste und mir war klar, dass der rapide Druckabfall nur Schnee / Kälte bedeuten könne. Und genau so war es auch. Ca. 1 1/2 Stunden später ging es dann richtig los. Eine ausreichende Früherkennung, wenn man irgendwo beim Wandern mal tatsächlich in einen Sturm oder Wetterumschwung geraten sollte - Danke, Suunto!!!Ich habe einige Klagen gelesen, dass die Höhenmeter nicht richtig errechnet werden würden. Das ist nicht richtig so. Die Suunto verfügt über 3 Modi. Der Höhenmodus (Altimodus) interpretiert jede Luftdruckänderung als Änderung der Höhe. Wenn dieser Modus aktiv ist, gibt es allerdings keine Wetterwarnanzeige, weil: Der Wettermodus (Baromodus) interpretiert jede Luftdruckänderung als Wetteränderung. Zuletzt gibt es noch den Automodus. Beide zuerst genannten gleichzeitig können nicht aktiv sein, da dafür zwei getrennt voneinander arbeitende Barometer zeitgleich arbeiten müssten. In einer Uhr dieses Formats wäre das wohl kaum zu realisieren, ohne dass sie klobig und klotzig werden würde. Dafür gibt es Handhelds von Garmin etc. Bilanz: Die Höhe bei der Suunto wird wie das Wetter über den Luftdruck errechnet. Je nach Modus zeigt es einem unterschiedliche Werte an. Es empfiehlt sich, die Suunto regelmäßig zu eichen, d.h., einen Referenzwert einzustellen, z.B. daheim (google liefert gute Ergebnisse auf der Suche nach den eigenen Höhenwerten, sogar mit Adresse!). Wer es auf den Meter genau braucht, der muss sich mit Karten beim Wandern behelfen oder die Werte den Schildern auf den Wanderrouten entnehmen, sofern er unterwegs ist. Aber das ist alles nicht nötig. Die Suunto hat nämlich einen dritten Modus, der automatisch Bewegung (Lagesensor im Kompass) und Ruhe erkennt. Bei Bewegung wird die Luftdruckänderung als Höhenänderung interpretiert, auch im Auto. Nach ca. 10 Min. relativen Stillstands (Pause beim Wandern, Erreichen des Ziels mit dem Auto) schaltet die Uhr in den Luftdruckmodus um und interpretiert nun die Luftdruckänderung als Wetteränderung - sofern es eine gibt. Das ist auch sinnvoll: Wenn man beim Wandern in den Bergen ist, achtet man auf das Wetter, da man in der Regel weit sieht. Bei hochalpinen Wanderungen schlägt das Wetter schnell um, aber da ist ohnehin der Wetterbericht vorher anzuhören. Bei einer Pause achtet man häufiger nicht auf den Himmel; die Suunto schaltet um und meldet, falls sich das Wetter verschlechtert. Und dazu nimmt sie auch nicht ganz neue Werte, sondern diejenigen, die sie während des Aufstiegs bereits zur Verfügung hat (Luftdruckmessung für Höhe + Wetter, je nach Interpretation). Dieses System ist absolut ausgeklügelt. Und wer während des Wanderns unbedingt den Wettertrend sehen will, der schaltet einfach in den Wettermodus um und bedankt sich bei der Suunto, dass sie nicht erst von vorne berechnen muss, weil irgend eine Unsinn die Höhe schätzt, sondern die Luftdruckwerte nimmt, die die Uhr die ganze Zeit schon beim Aufstieg (Höhenmodus) als Höhenänderung verarbeitet hat. Das macht alles Sinn, wenn man weiß, woher die Werte kommen und welche Möglichkeiten / Grenzen es gibt. Übrigens funktioniert der Automodus wunderbar, auch ohne ständiges Einstellen des Referenzwertes. Eine Fahrt mit dem Auto brachte mit -1m Abweichung und ca. 460 gemachten Höhenmetern (auf und ab über gut 70km) die Suunto wieder auf ihren daheim eingestellten Referenzwert zurück. Natürlich muss man die Referenz von Zeit zu Zeit einstellen. Selbst, wenn man das aber nicht tut, ist die Höhendifferenz noch immer verschmerzbar (in einer Woche und viel mit dem Auto unterwegs ca. 100m). Danke, Suunto!!!Einmal richtig kalibriert, funktioniert auch der Kompass tadellos und navigiert einen sogar auf den vorher eingestellten Wert. Durchaus verbesserungswürdig ist die Suunto in Punkto Wasserresistenz. 3 ATM ist manchem vielleicht zu wenig, aber in meinen Augen vollkommen ausreichend. Man muss ja nicht unbedingt damit unter die Dusche oder in die Badewanne. Allerdings weiß ich aus Erfahrung mit weitaus "billigeren" Uhren, dass 3 ATM auch zum Duschen ausreichend ist. Wichtig ist der Druck, der spontan auf das Gehäuse einwirkt, nicht der grundsätzliche Wasserdruck bzw. die Tiefe, in der die Uhr sich befindet. Tauchen / Schnorcheln ist mit der Suunto gewiss kein Problem, wenn sie nicht unbedacht mit voller Wucht auf die Wasseroberfläche aufschlägt.Gesamtfazit:Mit etwas Hintergrundwissen hält die Suunto, was sie verspricht. Diese Uhr ist nicht nur funktional, sondern auch alltagstäglich, was man am gesamten Design ablesen kann. Wenn man einen richtig robuste Outdoor-Uhr haben möchte, die jeden Steinschlag und Sturzbäche aushält, dann ist man mit dieser bzw. mit keiner "Uhr" gut bedient und sollte von der Idee eines Kaufs besser ablassen. Wer eine alltagstaugliche, eierlegende Wollmilchsau mit grundsätzlich gutem Wasserschutz und genügend Robustheit bei Bergtouren, wenn man nicht gerade Klettern geht, sucht, dann ist diese Uhr absolut zu empfehlen. Wie immer gilt: Vorher genau den Einsatzbereich und Zweck überlegen. Mit dem Prädikat "Outdoor" werben viele, implizit auch der BMW SUV X5. Aber "Outdoor" ist eben nicht gleich "Outdoor" - und das muss es auch nicht. Der Preis für die Suunto ist zumindest aktuell viel zu hoch. Ich habe die Uhr für etwa 220€ über Amazon direkt gekauft und das war meine Schmerzgrenze. Ich denke, dass v.a. das Design, was wirklich toll ist, für den hohen Preis verantwortlich ist.
