Motorcycle Basics Techbook

Female. Motorcycle owner and rider for some 45 years. I have a basic understanding of the mechanics of a motorcycle, but I wanted a more in depth education, especially since I have had a "fixer upper" sitting in my garage for almost 15 years. I was a bit hesitant because it is a 2002 book, but hey, my 3 bikes are all older than that!! So it's perfect! Have only gotten through the first two chapters so far, and I am really loving it!! Detailed info presented as if you have no knowledge, yet it's not for dummies. In just the first chapter, there is a nice breakdown of several different types of 2-strokes, and clearly explains the difference between piston port and reed valve. This is precisely the detailed descriptions that I've been looking for. There is no problem with paper quality with my printed copy, as I see some others seem to have had. If you want a detailed education on older bikes, this book is a complete gem! I'd give it ten stars if I could! The ONLY issue with me is that it is European. So some of the language is a little off, and spellings way off, haha. Not a big issue, just annoying.

I can't recall the number of "Oh, I see.. " I had while reading the book. With each page things are becoming less magical and you start to appreciate simple yet efficient solutions applied in different nodes of the machinery. The content is structured by function and each module is duly explored. You might not need internet at all but it served as a good supplement as to explore modern examples of the concepts. Moto noob yet enthusiastic? Must read then.

This is a terrific book for anyone wanting to know about the basics (and more) of motorcycle design. The illustrations are plentiful, clear, and well annotated. The text is simple and easy to understand. All systems are covered and many different design options are shown. Having said that, the content is biased toward European and Japanese designs, i.e. I have not seen any Harley content.

This is a great all around book that will clearly help you understand your motorcycle. Highly recommend reading it even if you consider yourself more advanced.

Certainly I can say that this was an eye-opening lecture full of very interesting and unexpected facts and topics for someone who almost knew absolutely NOTHING about motorcycles. If you already know the basics about engines and all the systems involved in making a motorcycle work, this might not be an interesting book for you, but it can doubtlessly be a refreshing reading to brush up on your knowledge. The book is divided in chapters each one describing a specific part of the machine. However, as the author highlights at the beginning, this is not specifically a manual that will guide you to do repairs on your own motorcycle but rather is a book that gives you a brief history of how some parts of the motorcycle were made and it will make you understand, in general terms, what is going on behind all that metal. In the first chapter, you’ll read the process that the engines (both 4 and 2 strokes) we have today have gone through to make them be more efficient and powerful. It was interesting to know how engine designers have made small clever changes throughout the years to aid in improving efficiency. Such as the case of the shape and number of inlet valves and its high impact on the final power output of the engine. Next comes a very interesting chapter, if not the most intriguing in my opinion, which is about carburetors. In our world that is practically dominated by electronics, seeing such a piece of engineering working mostly by mechanical parts is impressive. And that comes from someone who study electronics. Granted, carburetors are not as efficient as modern injectors, but that doesn’t take away the fact that they’re complex parts that apply the laws of physics, the Bernoulli effect for instance, worth to study and rewarding to see working. In the following chapters, you’ll go over the working principles of coolants, including brakes, suspension, oil pumps, etc and even a brief section on how a horn works. I can go on and on giving a brief explanation of each chapter, but I won’t or this review would be too long. I’ll be honest here, it was kind of hard to grasp all the concepts and working principles just by only reading and looking at the diagrams, considering that I didn’t have any previous experience working on them. So, I went to Youtube in search of videos of this. This way, I could understand most of the concepts explained in the book. I would highly recommend you to to do the same thing. It’ll be a much more enjoyable reading. At this point, I want to highlight some issues about the book. First, about the end of the first chapter the book was printed in what it looks to be recycled paper, I have nothing against that in fact I support it, but from that point all the pictures are in black and white, which is odd. That makes most of the pictures hard to understand if you haven’t worked on those parts. I often felt confused staring and trying to make sense of those black and white pictures. Some picture selections were not as intuitive to understand as others. In this case, pictures in color are superior to B&W pictures, especially in books like this where it’s important to explain pyshical concepts. In conclusion, after finishing the book, the way I see things have changed a lot. Now I look up to these amazing and complex pieces of engineering called motorcycles. I couldn’t have imagined that so many things were going on inside that two-wheel vehicle. Maybe I’m exaggerating, maybe I’m not. You be the judge after reading this book.

Muy buen manual, aunque trae lo básico para conocer lo relacionado al tema del mantenimiento de las motos cumple muy bien su propósito, con este manual junto el específico de las motos, se facilita el trabajo, ya no tengo que llevarlas al taller de motos.

My fiance purchase this book help him get started on a restoration product on a 1980 Honda I've seen him constantly reference it to look up how to repair certain parts of the vehicle and I think as a whole it's really helped him expand his knowledge of motorcycle repair

Most in depth then I thought it would be for a basic book however I am very please with my purchase. If you take the time to study and revisit the material and use YouTube videos to help you understand it will start to click little by little . Great book. So much information.

This is a great book for anyone who is looking to understand how a motorcycle works.

I don't have a motorcycle, but I want one, so it's on the shelf, it looks good on the shelf, beside my tools, people think I'm more manly now.

This book is very good. Well detailed. For someone who doesn't know too much about motorcycles sometimes its a little bit hard to understand things. But, watching some videos on youtube to help with the read, its possible to get a rich knowledge. Im happy with it. The quality of the pages are not the best one, but its not something that is a problem in general. I recommend the book if you want to get serious knowledge about the main components of a motorcycle.

Books about bikes are rare and books about a bike's working is rarer still. Haynes manual is one of the best books you can find to either brush up ur knowledge or get a fair idea of how the mechanics in bikes work. Very useful for someone passionate about bikes... Cheers
