Before I bought this, the environmental temperature and humidity readings were not very useful during the day, as the sun would beat down on the sensor unit, corrupting the temperature and humidity. It would often report temperatures well over 100F, even though it was only about 70F and sunny, and since the humidity calculations depend on local temperature, those were also skewed very low the sunnier it was. Once I installed this enclosure and placed the sensor unit inside, I get much more reasonable values for the readings, and it also provides protection from precipitation. The hot tub used to be covered by a structure, but the wood supports rotted and I had to take it down before it fell down, so it was now open to the rain. There is a vertical bracket that mounts to a structure, (in my case, the side panel of the hot tub, but it could be a post, tree, side of the house, etc.). This plastic bracket is mounted with the four provided screws. The enclosure slides into the bracket and is made of two pieces. One is a cylinder with vents to allow air flow, and with an open bottom, with a bottom circular piece that is attached via tabs and slots to the bottom of the cylinder and rotated to lock in place. The bottom panel had a hole, designed to accommodate the cable and connector of the probe for the La Crosse Alerts unit. I ended up drilling the hole slightly larger to fit an additional slightly larger probe through the hole from a sensor by a different manufacturer. Since the enclosure is sturdy plastic, it was a simple matter to drill the existing hole to make it a bit larger to fit the additional fatter cable. Mounted on the north side of the house it should work fine to protect the sensor from the elements. **Q: We here in Colorado, have a lot of wasps (or wasp impersonators) this looks like a perfect starter hive for a queen; anyone seen this?** A: The slots are definitely large enough for wasps. You could slip a rolled up screen inside, but even the vent slots on the bottom would have to be covered as well. I wouldn't try to spray the inside with wasp killer (repels them as well) because the plastic is so cheap it would likely dissolve. My Colorado wasps are not deterred by "bright light" as they built a nest inside one of my outdoor light fixtures/wall sconces where the lights are left on all night (learned that when I got stung changing the bulb!) I just hung them up without any screen or other deterrent. I guess I'll know in a month or two! **Q: Can i use this sensor to replace the one i currently usemodel tx37u or do i buy a total new set?** A: This isn't a sensor. This is a sensor weather shield. Your sensor that came with your weather station goes inside the shield. If you need a new sensor, you will need to buy that separately. **Q: Can i place this in a mailbox because i absolutely have no where else to place this shield from being in direct sunlight. ?** A: It’s unlikely you’ll get accurate readings when the sensor is in a mailbox as it has to be able to detect air temps, moisture and humidity from the outdoor environment. Initial temperatures seem to be about 4 degrees high. Found better location and cable tied to a light fixture I do not use.
