Herbin 10 White Blotter Sheets - 4 3/4 x 6 1/3

All paper is not the same in terms of absorbency, and my love of fountain pens often is thwarted by cheap paper allowing smudging, plus my being left-handed. I feel like an idiot for never considering the use of blotting paper, until watching a period drama last week I saw a character blot the note she'd just written -- bingo! This blotting paper came overnight and works exactly as expected -- each of the ten sheets is thin but sturdy and can be reused over and over again. Love it! If you use fountain pens, this stuff will keep your correspondence neat and un-smudged and your hands ink-free.

* My fountain pen is included in the photo here to show the size of the sheets. I've been using fountain pens daily for many years now and I've never used blotting paper before. I didn't think I needed them, as the papers I had been using weren't really fountain pen-friendly and they weren't the nice new slick Japanese and European types that help the ink to glide over the paper. Since discovering these new papers and notebooks made exclusively for fountain pens - those having a slicker feel to them to discourage feathering and bleed-through, I now feel the need to use a type of blotting paper. My inks, especially my shimmers and my sheens, can stay quite wet on the paper for quite a bit, and when I close my notepad after letting them fully dry (or so I thought!) I find that when I open the notepad the next day, I have these ugly ink smears on the previous page. Blotting paper is a great product from the past! These nice pepto-bismal pink sheets are heavy and thick and they will last a long time. They are sturdy and just the perfect size for slipping into my 175 Mnemosyne notepads, and they do not hang over the edge of the paper. I like the pink color, as they even function as a fast bookmark to let me know where I left off writing. When you have to close your notepad up real fast, just slip one of them in on top of your writing and no mess the next time you open it up again! Really glad I ordered them and they will become an everyday permanent feature on my desktop. They are made in France and have a cute little antique inkwell and feather printed on the front of each sheet. A very worthwhile order!

If you need blotter paper these work great, I am using it for Japanese markers that leave a lot of liquid, and it is great for this along with the fountain pens.

I write with a De'Atrementis archival fountain pen in my Sterling Ink b6 journal, which is made with Tomoe River paper. I keep a few of these blotter sheets dispersed throughout the journal. I often jump from one page to another and toss one of these in before I move on to the next page and never have a problem with smudging. The paper size is just slightly larger than the B6 journal pages, so I know the whole page has been covered. It does not stick out far enough to be a problem... maybe 1/16-1/8" on each side. I use a hobonichi-style cover and the blotting sheet does not interfere at all with the cover operation.

Blots ink effectively. Expensive. Kind of bigger than expected, had to trim to fit on my roller.

I'm a fan of fountain pens and good journals, but I have an issue with the dry time with some of the "wetter" inks. As I flipped to the next page, the one I just finished would sometimes bleed onto the facing page. Usually not a big deal, but something I wanted to avoid if I could. I write in journals and notebooks with a 5.5 x 8.25 inch page and I wanted blotter paper that would fit the format without a lot of cutting. These sheets are almost the perfect size with zero overhang and great coverage of the writing area. I originally wanted the white but that was out of stock so I went with the pink. The pink has the unexpected benefit of "showing" where I last wrote so I don't need to use the ribbon placeholder. The blotter paper comes in packs of ten. I gave some to my daughter for her journals, but I think I still have a life time supply. After a couple months of use, the first sheet is still in great shape and shows no sign of slowing down. Most importantly for me, no more smudges and smears when I flip the page.
