I have a 13 inch early 2011 macbook pro. it has the same a1278 model number. will this part work?

Depends on what the problem is with your MacBook. Is your machine having difficulty booting into the hard drive? Can you test the hard drive separate to the machine to test if it will boot off a other machine. If it can but won't boot off the Mac book then it this cable could be damaged.

will this work on a mid 2012 macbook pro 13" original HDD cable number 821-00698-A

I put one of these into my 2012 MacBook Pro 13" and things improved dramatically. I'd been experiencing lost data, random sleeping/not-sleeping and 10 - 15 minute start-up times. I thought it was the hard drive, but the Mac wrecked the new drive. replaced the ribbon cable and got my Mac back! Not sure of the original part number, sorry.
