I started DJing in the 70s using a pair of Technics SL-1200MK2 turntables paired with Shure M 97 cartridges. A pair of phase linear 400 power amps and the 4000 preamp. I retired from professional DJing in the mid 90s. I came out of retirement for a brief period in late 2003/2004 during which time I played around with the Numark CDN 90. This unit made a great impression on me. This review however is not about the CDN 90. It is about the Numark IDJ LIVE 2, so let me get on with it.I received the controller about a month ago. It worked right out of the box, no problems whatever. I wanted to spend some time with it, put it through its paces, do a few gigs and see how it holds up before I post a review. I must point out I am 59 years old and I quit the club DJ scene many years ago. I now mostly do old school back in times house parties, wedding receptions, that sort of thing.I bought this unit to see if I still 'got it' and if I could get back in the DJ game. The unit is very basic in function and features but what it can do it does well. I can do some scratching, beat matching and looping with it. I use it with a MacBook Pro and a pair of powered boxes.At first glance when you take the controller out of the the box it appears to be light and flimsy, don't be fooled it is a very functional unit. It might not stand up to the roughing up of the club scene, it was not designed for that. I think this unit was made for the beginner DJ who wants to test the waters before spending a lot of money on one of the higher priced controllers.I just love this controller and I use it all the time, when I am not out on a gig I hook up a set of headphones to my iPad and I practice. It works on my iPad, and my windows (7) desktop as well. The included software , Virtual DJ LE is very easy to use and works well on my MacBook and PC. On the iPad I use a software called dejay which is available on the Apple AppStore.In closing let me say I am so impressed with this unit that it has whetted my appetite for bigger things. I ordered the Numark mixtrack pro.
