Within the Marvel Universe, heroes soar high in the skies, ready to battle the villains who threaten their world. Yet living in the shadow of these extraordinary icons are ordinary men and women who view the 'Marvels' with a mixture of fear, disbelief, envy and admiration. Among them is Phil Sheldon, a New York City photojournalist who has dedicated his career to covering the exploits of the Marvels and their effect on humankind. Written by Kurt Busiek and masterfully illustrated by Alex Ross, Marvels presents a richly painted historical overview of the entire Marvel Universe, spanning from the 1939 debut of the Human Torch to the fearsome coming of the world-devouring Galactus - and culminating in the shocking death of Gwen Stacy, Spider-Man's first love. Collecting: Marvels 0-4 Review: One of the best comics I have ever read. - I saw this recommended on a YouTube video and purchased it. No regrets, it’s brilliant. Without spoiling the story, its from teh view point of the public and news reporters rather than from teh super heroes. I do know the origin of Human Torch and Sub-Mariner and that helps in the first book but if you are unaware, it still reads well. Artwork. Is excellent - paintings rather than drawings and the stories really do suck you in. Review: Good buy - Excellent read

A classic comic
An excellent storyline, basically how the superheroes of the marvel universe are seen from a normal person's perspective. The artwork is superb.

Fabulous
The storyline, using the photo journalist to tell the story of the marvel’s universe is inspired. Alex Ross’ artwork is sensational with huge personality. Inspired to read more by both

Great addition or starter point
Artwork is second to none, and I think this would be a brilliant book to start your marvel journey with. It shows the origins of the Human Torch, Mr Fantastic and The Invisible Girl's wedding (guests include The Beatles), and even The tragedy of Gwen Stacy - all through the eyes of Phil Sheldon, a photographer. It shows the fickle mind of the public as they witness the scenes from below, and while some may be lost in the goings on of the snippets of the heroes storylines it still flows and keeps you reeled in. I recommend it as a first because then you could see what peaked your interest to read next, The Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, or The Amazing Spider-Man! All little features but no less amazing in their small part!

A brief history of Marvel. And a mighty good one at that.
If there is one book I'd recommend to get into Marvel comics. This would be it. The Alex Ross art is larger than life. Kurt Busiek is weaving a tale so engrossing and yet the scale is huge. It's an ambitious retelling of every major Marvel event in a way that's accessible and grand at the same time. The product itself felt a little flimsy. The glue and spine of the book seemed bent. But this book was not available and I had to wait for a long time to get it at the desired price. It's a certified hood classic.

Essential read
Nice edition of this classic comic; half of this paperback is dedicated to extras so it comes nicely packed with sketches, essays and covers.

Buy it.
My main issue is that the story ends to soon.(In my opinion) and the cover only features spider-man when he’s a minor background character.
