Victron Energy Smart Battery Sense, Voltage and Temperature Sensor, Long Range (up to 10m)

Useful addition for the Victron MPPT controller to enable efficient battery charging based on voltage and temperature. By measuring voltage at the battery bank terminals, errors arising from voltage-loss due to cable resistance are avoided - guaranteeing the correct charge-voltage. For lead batteries, battery temperature data is used to adjust the charge-voltages: cold batteries require an increased charge-voltage, whereas hot batteries require a decreased charge-voltage. For lithium batteries temperature data is used to disable charging when they are too cold: charging lithium batteries near or below freezing causes permanent damage to the cells. No additional wires needed between the two units Very easy to set-up and connect to both the app and the Victron MPPT via their VE.Smart Networking: 1) Start by connecting to the newly installed battery sense in the App (it will automatically suggest to update firmware if required (If you have an active 4G or WiFi on your device). 2) clicking on the cog and the VE.Smart Networking allows you to either create or join an existing network 3) If MPPT is not already on a network, you then just go back into the MPPT controller, to the cog icon then to VE Smart Network and then join this product to the network. Hey presto! all done! No issues with the Bluetooth range and you are left with a tidy setup

This is the second one of these I have purchased, one for my caravan and the other a camper van. Both work perfectly and allow one to keep track of your battery’s state of charge over extended lay ups. They also effortlessly connect to my other Victron accessories via the free Victron Connect App. One minor criticism is the size of the ring terminals fitted, they are huge! However easy enough to snip them off and replace with, in my cases, a 6mm ring terminal.

Having lost a pair of batteries in my Land Cruiser when the Alternator went on the frizz I wanted to make sure that the charging system and new batteries and alternator were all working ok. The Sensor was simple to install as the eyelets bolt directly to the battery terminals. Once I connected the Victron Connect app on my phone to the Sensor, the app immediately downloaded new firmware for the Sensor. It rebooted and connected to my phone app at once, displaying the voltage and temperature of the battery (or pair of batteries in my case). I've included a screenshot showing the background voltage of my batteries (12.7v ie 100% charge), the voltage dip as the starter motor turned the engine over, and then the initial charge voltage when the engine started, a perfect 14.2v from the new alternator. Exactly what I needed to know, everything is working perfectly in the LC. The story doesn't end there. I also have an old campervan and I'd like the same confidence in its charging system and starter battery, the battery being at least 6 years old. My solution was to buy some industrial velcro on Amazon and put the bluetooth sensor in a tight pouch of female velcro. With a strip of male velcro stuck to the top of the battery, the sensor can be moved from vehicle to vehicle as required, once unbolted of course.

This is at the expensive end of Bluetooth battery monitors, but can easily be networked with solar controllers to monitor voltage and temperature to optimise charging. Works well.

Works great stops the lithium batteries charging below 5 degrees.

Easy to install on a motorcycle, voltage matches what a multimeter reads. However - no onboard storage so every time you connect to it you're left with a big gap in your graph. A lot of the very cheap competitors on here seem to store a month's worth, but I wanted the peace of mind of a reputable brand and a reputable app. Edit - I was wrong - it does store previous measurements, the app was just behaving a bit funny but it works perfectly now.

Update (11/18/23): The VE app keeps historical data for 180 days, and will also generate graphs (e.g. voltage and temperature) [pics added]. Update (2/12/23): Current inventory of VE products: (2) 100V/50A, (2) 100V/30A, (1) 100V/20A, (1) SmartShunt IP67 (newer), (1) SmartShunt (older), (1) BatterySense. Best feature is the VE.Smart networking feature, which allows the components to work together to optimize charging of the battery bank. Summary: This review is for the Smart Battery Sense monitor, which is a bluetooth voltage and temperature monitoring device. This has voltage and temperature monitoring. Whereas the SmartShunt can measure current too, but lacks the temperature ( can be added with an extra sensor ). Current solar/PV system specs: 4kW of panels (most are 100W panels); 24-volt, 21kWh marine AGM battery bank; 3500W inverter; VE SmartSolar MPPT controllers: 20A (one), 30A (two), 50A (one); battery sense monitor (one). Observations: Currently have the battery monitor and two current shunts (one for battery, and one in energy monitor mode to see the current draw into the inverter). One of Victron's best features is the ability to network the controllers together, so that you don't over charge your batteries. I am running four (4) VE MPPT controllers, and 75% of the panels feed into those, but I have a few other test MPPT controllers as well, so having the capability for the VEs to stop charging (absorption and float) is very important to prevent over charging your batteries. Recommendation: If you're trying to determine if the Victron Energy family of components is worth the extra money, I would say yes, based on the ability to integrate different components (mppt, battery monitors [current, voltage]). If you have a simple system, and do not need bluetooth monitoring, there are other solar/PV controllers for less. Pros: VE iPhone/iPad app works well; VE networking. Cons: None for now. Conclusion: At $40, rating this 5-stars.
