Do NOT listen to the one star reviews!
I can not stress enough how invalid every single point made in the 1 star reviews are. The main complaint that almost all of them have, and really the only complaint outside of "it's not Modern Warfare 2" which I personally see as a good thing, is that the servers were overloaded during the first several days of the launch. Anyone who has ever played any big online game knows that this always happens, which doesn't mean it's a good thing, but it's par for the territory. Sure, they could have over prepared and deployed way more servers then they did, and gambled that the sales would surpass their projections as much as they did, but they decided to play it safe and trust that the community would be willing to wait a day or two for things to settle down before passing judgement. Obviously there are some less patient and understanding (and intelligent and mature) gamers who throw tantrums when they don't have their way when they want it. These are the people giving this game one star. Go ahead and read their reviews. All they're complaining about was the lag and disconnects at the launch. I played online for 14 hours today, and was disconnected once and that was 100% on my end (don't buy belkin wireless routers). There are some more thought out negative reviews out there, but their points are made moot when you consider the facts and stop making assumptions, but I'll get into those later. Ok, all of that aside, my impressions of the game. The fact that I feel so compelled to defend them should tell you something, and no it doesn't mean I work for them, or that I'm some fanboy. The game isn't perfect, by any means, but in my opinion it's the best game in the genre on the market today. I've been a devoted pc fps gamer ever since wolfenstein 3d, and started playing competitively in quake1 in 1996. This means I've likely been playing this style of game since before many of the gamers were born. During that time, I've seen more then my fair share of terrible games that were overhyped (wargasm), and great games that got lost in the shuffle (global operations). Battlefield: Bad Company 2 deserves every bit of hype that it's gotten and more. Like I said before, the game isn't without it's flaws, but overall it gives way more bang for the buck then just about anything else out there. I won't go into real detail on the pros and cons of the game as Zoidberg (one of the other reviewers here) already covered them very well, but I will try to address some of the other concerns about the game that I've heard here and elsewhere. The first is that it isn't a true battlefield game. This is correct, it's a bad company game, which is a spin off of the battlefield series. It's not meant to be BF3, so don't judge it like it is. It's meant to have a more fast paced arcade feel to it. That's why there are smaller maps, with less players, and no commander or jets. Pretending like it's BF3 and snubbing your nose at the things that make it different from BF2 and the future BF3 don't prove anything other then your inability to understand simple concepts. The other pitfall I see a lot of reviewers falling into is the "well modern warfare 2 did it this way..." issue. Honestly, I don't think I should have to explain why this is a foolish comparison to make, but I will try to shed a little light on those who seem to live in the dark. It's like comparing checkers to chess, MW2 being checkers and BC2 chess. You have to remember what each game is trying to simulate. MW2 is meant to be a small scale special ops style gun fight, where as BC2 is meant to be a medium scale military engagement. One has a very narrow set of pieces, and caters to people who use a small set of tactics. Basically, much like checkers, whatever player gets a couple of kings (killstreaks) first, wins. BC2 on the other hand, has a wider variety of pieces, which are designed to compliment each other to allow the players to execute more complicated tactics as a team. So long story short, don't listen to all the whining and cry babies who would rather throw and tantrum then exercise a little patience. This game is going to be one of the biggest and best FPS in town for a long time to come, well at least until BF3 comes out ;) Well worth every penny I paid for it, and considering they've already released one free map pack with more on the way, and have promised to continue to add content for free, breaking the disturbing trend in gaming where a partial game is released as a full priced title and then DLC is added to milk the customer's wallet. Hats off to DICE and EA for a great product!

Game with great potential but a few problems
What can I say? DICE was pushing this as an alternative to MW2 because of the whole dedicated server thing. But, despite some great things, the game's been hurt by bugs and a broken server browser (which defeats the purpose of dedicated servers). The Good The single player game is your basic romp through a bunch of levels that really don't suck you in at all. You can't really compare it to MW2 since IW is just good at that. DICE's Battlefield series has always been about the multiplayer. That said, if you don't mind the hyperaccurate AI (well, if you sit still long enough), it's decent fun but think of it as bonus content. You're really here for the BF multiplayer experience. Multiplayer is definitely fun once you get past the issues (see below). There are four basic multiplayer game types: Conquest, Rush, Squad Deathmatch and Squad Rush which translates to domination, point-cap, mini-TDM, and--well--mini-point-cap. With Conquest, two teams grab a handful of points. The more points you own as a team, the faster your opponents tickets tick down. Once your tickets reach zero, it's game over for your team. Basically, classic Battlefield multiplayer. Rush is essentially Search and Destroy (from MW2) minus perma-death and multiplied by 3-4 times since after destroying both targets the next two points and a new chunk of the map opens up. It's actually a lot of fun and is probably the best part of MP for me at least. The squad games play off the fact that BC2 carries over the squad system from BF2 (minus the commander). Squads in the other modes allow to you spawn near living squad mates and give you bonuses for kills and the like. In the squad game types, you're basically part of a squad and playing the relevant game mode (Rush or TDM). It creates a more intimate game play experience but is also a bit more rare than the other modes. Within a match, you can select one of four classes: Assault, Medic, Engineer, and Recon (Sniper). Each one has access to a primary weapon, a pistol, a specialty kit (which can be upgraded) and a series of "abilities" or bonuses. For example, you can unlock scopes or better health kits (with a wider range) or vehicle abilities. As you rank up (getting points from kills/achievements), you'll unlock those abilities but only if you're playing the class in question. In addition, as you'd expect from a BF game and one of the features MW2 is sorely lacking, vehicles are a big part of MP with transport vehicles (ATV, HUMV, and a sort of APC), tanks (light and heavy), and helos (blackhawks and apaches). The vehicles are a blast but (for obvious reasons) they can be taken down pretty quickly with RPGs, stationary ATs, and other attacks. Of course, vehicles come with the usual problem of players who grab one and run off with it leaving you to run into battle...and run you will given the size of the maps (again, what's the point of vehicles if you can't move 10 feet). But that's a player issue more than a gameplay issue. Another nice feature is the "socialize" button. What it really is is a context-sensitive notification for your team. If your cursor is on a tank and you hit the key (default is Q), your guy in-game will say something along the lines of "Hey, guys, it looks like we've got a tank over here." That tank will pop-up on the in-game map as an icon for a time. Same goes for other vehicles and players and can be used when you hover over objectives (tell your squad to grab that objective) or teammates (e.g. tell your medic you need a health kit). Lastly, after playing a lot of Red Faction, here's a game that FINALLY implements destructible environments outside of...well...Red Faction. It's quite frankly awesome. It also affects gameplay (which it should) where you can drop a building to get rid of a sniper nest or even better to blow an objective. Some structures aren't destructible but most of them are. Lob a nade, use the blackhawk's mini, call in a mortar strike or hit it with a tank and you can start breaking up a building. Really fun stuff. The Bad Outside of lag and network issues (there were PunkBuster and general connection issues), the real problems aren't when you're playing...they're in the lead up to game play. The most critical thing you need in this game in order to access those ballyhooed dedicated servers and actually play the game--the server browser--is ridiculously inconsistent. What's wrong? - Filters don't stick - Leaving a server and checking the browser? Filters have been reset. - Pings don't show up all the time, which makes it hard to find server that are better/closer. - Favorites won't always save (timeout) and when saved are often grayed out in the list even though you can find them on the main server list. - When you filter on PB servers, the loading screen shows the server's settings (supposedly) and it always shows PB as off. - Oh yeah, if you refresh a few times, the game crashes. Oops. Then there's the the friend system...which doesn't work...what's the point then? Alright, you've read through all of that (or rather skipped to the end), so what do you do? Despite the bugs, DICE has been trying to fix the major issues at least. And, if you can get by the server browser and find a few servers you like, the game can be fun (of course, as with any game, that'll also depend on your teammates) and the good stuff outweighs the bad for now. Does it really kill MW2? No but they've both always been different games. If you're a shooter fan, you've got to grab this game.
