Historical Linguistics, third edition: An Introduction

Have been using this for a class for about a month. LOVE the subject matter and organization. The writing could be a bit simpler/clearer at times, but I haven't had too much trouble. The only real issue I have is the lack of use of IPA symbols. Well, they are in there sometimes, but when I'm trying to do an exercise, it can get really confusing trying to figure out what sound is represented when he uses a combination of different systems (sometimes within the same exercise)! For instance, we just worked on an exercise about Japanese loanwords and sound changes going from English to Japanese. I know what sounds are in the English words because I speak English (though IPA might have been nice here), but I don't know how all of the sounds in the Japanese words sound. I can kinda guess that Japanese vowels are like Spanish vowels, but how do I pronounce this 'j'? Or any other letter, for that matter? Also, there are a couple of typos around within the data in some exercises.

I was excited to get this kindle version of the textbook but had to buy the hard copy after realizing that there were many IPA errors in the ebook version.

The reading of this book allows to discover interesting facts in determining relationship between languages as proto from the same mother.

It can be dense at times, but it is much better than other textbooks I've used for historical linguistics

I am currently using this book in a BA level course on historical linguistics, and I have read such an amount of it that I feel qualified to write a review.Campbell succeeds where our other course book ("Understanding language change" by McMahon) fails, in providing easily accessible, concise and still quite expansive knowledge on different types of language change. Whenever I have jotted down my readings for the next week, I start on the new Campbell chapter with glee, knowing I have much to gain from it, and little keeping me from enjoying and understanding it. The one downside I find is that Campbell uses his knowledge of Meso-American languages to a degree which does not aid in my understanding of the subject. Compared to McMahon, his examples are quite hard to relate to.I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in languages or linguistics, especially considering the fair price point (it's £50 at my university bookstore), and level of accessability.

El manual de Campbell es todo un clásico desde su primera edición, allá hacia 1997, y esta edición tiene notables mejoras.Lo llamo manual porque es un libro pensado en la instrucción: bien estructurado, con muchos ejercicios y bien pensados. Una virtud distintiva es que los ejemplos y ejecricios se toman de diversas familias lingüísticas. Si acaso decir que esto es para el profesor y el estudiante serios (si se me permite decir, no es para aquellos que usan la excusa "es que soy de letras"). La materia no es de memorizar y repetir, sino de analizar, algunos ejercicios son complicados. Afortunadamente los lingüistas no suelen tener ese problema, pero a gente de otros campos que quieran saber algo del tema (p. ej. filólogos) les puede resultar complicado, aunque aun así se lo recomiendo encarecidamente: aprenderán muchísimo.Pero mirémoslo por el lado positivo: si alguien quiere aprender, no pasar el rato leyendo algo ligero, sino aprender... éste es su libro. Los que queremos leer libros buenos también tenemos derecho.Respecto a la primera edición, el libro incluye más ejercicios y algunos capítulos nuevos que hacen la presentación más equilibrada (antes recaía principalmente en el aspecto fonético, que es importantísimo, pero no lo es todo). Por ejemplo: hay un capítulo nuevo sobre el cambio morfológico (en concreto es el que me ha decidido a coger esta nueva edición).Un aspecto adicional es que en la web de la editorial se pueden descargar las soluciones de los ejercicios para que el profesorado pueda comprobarlas mejor. Es un detalle.Para los familiarizados con el tema quizá sobrara parte de lo discutido sobre macro-comparaciones lingüísitcas. Seamos, serios, aunque algunas tienen sentido, y en general haya que estudiar las posibilidades, muchas de ellas tienen un planteamiento tan endeble pero tan promocional que parecen más pensadas para "fingir" un descubrimiento y vender libros, publicar e ir a congresos. La reacción de Campbell contra la moda de las macro-comparaciones es correcta, pero al no "llamar las cosas por su nombre" para algunas, quizás haga que los disparates de unas salpiquen sobre la credibilidad de hipótesis más dignas.
