It’s not an apples to apples comparison The Berkey’s are patented multi-media filters designed to filter contaminated water. Wheras these filters are coconut charcoal designed to filter tapwater. **Q: Why are the TDS much higher than tap water after filtering the water** A: No idea, but stick with the Berkeley filters. These knock-offs suck. They do not filter as well, and the documents sent with the filters tells you they are not to be used outside of a domestic water system. May as well buy a brita filter instead of these. I made the mistake of getting them and noticed right away how bad they are. **Q: How do I perform the red dye test and where do I get it?** A: It is not something you get. Once you have your filters installed fill your system with water. Then add a few drops of red food coloring. If your filters are working right the water once it has run through the filters should come out clear.
