Google Coral USB Accelerator: ML Accelerator, USB 3.0 Type-C, Debian Linux Compatible

So happy that I bought this. My cloud services are no longer needed because this Coral USB TPU offloads my CPU with AI image recognition. All the software I'm using is free open source. The Coral USB TPU plugs into a Beelink mini PC S13 N150 that's running a standalone HAOS Home Assistant Operating System using the Frigate NVR Add On. By adding a couple of lines of YAML in the Frigate configuration, the image recognition task is now handled by this Coral TPU. It has a blue LED, steady ON dim means it's ready, then brightens up while crunching data. I watched youtube " Coral AI Person Detection with Home Assistant & Frigate" and asked ChatGPT for detailed help. Frigate is now capturing video shots and snippets of objects that I'm interested in and ignores the rest. In my case it captures and tracks people, cars, motorcycles, dogs, cats, and bicycles.

This has served me well. I use it to identify objects on my security cameras and I cannot complain.

Used Google Coral as TPU for Frigate NVR with excelent results!

I run two of these for frigate, really frees up my GPU for other stuff.

I bought this because it was available, knowing that it was less preferred over the m2 slot and other varieties (that are still backordered everywhere). Can confirm it's not great - disconnects all the time and was a pain to set up and keep going with CodeProject AI. I think the performance is adequate when it's working, but I can't handle the disconnects. It's plugged in to my security camera computer which outputs to my TV. I'm seldom viewing it through the TV which is a good thing - because I'd hear the USB connected/disconnected noise every 20 seconds. I know it's not overheating either, I've had a fan blowing ambient temp room air on it since installation. Tried all of my USB ports and a dozen USB cables. Shame it's so unreliable.

Must have if you are using Frigate on Home Assistant. Allows you to drop the main CPU usage and process tenfold more video streams with object recognition. With this accelerator, I am able to process streams from my 5 HD cameras with object recognition, on RPI4 and reasonable CPU consumption. Works stable and doesn't cause any problems

Einrichtung & Nutzung: Die Einrichtung war dank der Anleitung auf der Coral-Webseite gut machbar, auch wenn man ein bisschen Technik-Grundwissen mitbringen sollte. Ich habe den Accelerator auf meinem Raspberry Pi 4 verwendet und ein einfaches Bilderkennungsprojekt umgesetzt – die Geschwindigkeit beim Erkennen war beeindruckend. Was man beachten sollte: Der Accelerator funktioniert mit sogenannten TensorFlow-Lite-Modellen. Diese muss man vorher „quantisieren“ – also anpassen –, damit sie auf dem Gerät laufen. Das war für mich als Einsteiger neu, aber es gibt gute Schritt-für-Schritt-Tutorials online. Vorteile: Sehr kompakt – passt wie ein USB-Stick in den PC oder Raspberry Pi Macht KI-Projekte deutlich schneller Keine Internetverbindung nötig Gute Dokumentation und Community Nachteile: Nur mit bestimmten KI-Modellen nutzbar (TensorFlow Lite) Etwas Einarbeitung nötig, wenn man neu im Thema ist Fazit: Der Coral USB Accelerator ist ideal für alle, die erste Schritte mit KI und Bilderkennung machen wollen – besonders auf kleinen Geräten wie dem Raspberry Pi. Man lernt viel dabei, und die Ergebnisse sind beeindruckend schnell. Für Technikinteressierte absolut empfehlenswert!

Imprescindible para usar detección de objetos en frigate e integrarlo en Home Assistant. El precio es elevado, pero al fin y al cabo con el poco stock que hay, si no te importa pagar más y tenerlo al día siguiente... Comparando con otras web si sumas el coste del envío, al final no hay mucha diferencia entre allí y aquí, y la confianza que me da Amazon, prefiero pagar un poco más.

I use it to offload my homeassistant with object and face detections, works like a charm despite the high price point. Great if you are running home assistant on a raspberry pi or pc hardware.
