This book provides such a strong foundation you would be crazy not to have it on your book shelf for reference if you do anything really materials oriented. Review: The Definitive MatSci Textbook - When I was finishing my MatSci undergrad degree, one of my T.A.s was taking his orals for a Ph.D. He passed handily. When asked how he prepared, he said that he studied Callister until he understood *everything*. However the rub lies in the material covered through the examinations provided through the text book company.
