A great upgrade
One of my mini Mag-Lites was damaged by battery leakage on the spring and would no longer power on. I purchased the Nite Ize not only for the LED feature but also to replace the bottom cap assembly. This solution was less expensive than purchasing the OEM part, and gave me a much brighter flashlight as well! Installing the bulb consists of unscrewing the head of the flashlight, pulling out the bulb and conical reflector and replacing these items with the new parts. It's important to note that the freely turning base disk that holds the original bulb does not come out (it even says "do not remove"), even though the new LED comes with its own similar-looking disc. I mistakenly thought that the new disk would replace the old one, but unfortunately it doesn't work this way; the new disk, with the LED embedded into it, presses into the old disk and thus the bulb assembly is now about 2mm longer than before. If it doesn't work at first, you need to pull it out again and reverse the position to reverse the polarity; you have a 50% chance of getting it right the first time. Then you replace the head of the flashlight and screw it on as much as it allows, which you should be aware is less than before. To turn on the flashlight, you either use the new button on the base or the regular twist-on switch. I love the button because it allows me to switch on the flashlight with one hand, convenient when my other hand is holding a screwdriver or whatever. Others have noted that the button seems flimsy. I've only had this unit a few days so cannot comment on its long term serviceability but for now it works great. If you store your new, improved Mag Mini in your glove compartment, I would recommend twisting it off, because the button is fairly sensitive and it might switch on while bouncing and rolling around. The LED makes the flashlight brighter than before, but not quite as bright as a regular LED Mag Mini. Is it worth the money? I think so. Some of these cheaper LED flashlights seem to die after a few weeks of use, whereas the Mags just keep on working (until the battery leaks).

I don't know how I lived without this!
I've used a Mini Mag-lights with two AA batteries for many years. They are sturdy and reliable. The incandescent bulb in the original version eventually burns out, but there's always been a spare in the tail end cap (until you use that one and then forget to replace it). One thing I never liked was that, to turn the light on or off, one had to twist the headpiece, which changed the focus of the flashlight. I bought this kit over a year ago, and I have to say it's a great retrofit. The kit includes a replacement reflector, an LED bulb, and a tail cap with a pushbutton switch in it. It just takes a couple of minutes to install. The light is about 100% brighter, the bulb has lasted much longer than incandescent bulbs did (maybe it'll last forever), the batteries last much longer, and there's no more de-focusing to turn on and off. My opinion: all positives, no negatives, and it pays for itself quickly in reduced battery and bulb replacement costs.

Breathes new life into an old flashlight
I had a couple of aluminum-bodies flashlights that were given to me as part of a promotional deal (think Mag-Lite knockoffs). The quality was nothing to brag about but they were a convenient size to keep in a tool pouch, and I wouldn't be upset if one got lost, stolen, or mangled. But they use incandescent bulbs, which are really just tiny battery discharging machines that happen to give off a feeble glow. I took a $6 gamble on this kit and I'm glad I did. It replaced all of the existing flashlight hardware with no modifications. Now I have a slender flashlight with a pushbutton switch on the end cap (my personal preference). I bought another kit and converted a second flashlight to keep in the car. Sounds pretty good, right? Well, don't get too excited just yet. The single LED isn't exactly a spotlight. A cheap, $1 multi-led flashlight from any of the usual sources will be brighter, and the switch on the endcap has a habit of clicking itself on when you shove it into a pocket or pouch. Since I keep mine as backups, I have one battery turned around inside the flashlight body. The light won't work until you turn the reverse-polarity battery around again, but you also won't drain the batteries down if you accidentally click the switch. This kit isn't a magic bullet that will turn your obsolete Mag Lite into a zillion-lumen torch. It's an inexpensive way to turn that old Mag Lite (or perhaps a clone) into a durable, reasonably bright, battery-conserving light that's handy to have around.

cop streamlite, at10 cents on the dollar!
well over the last 2 decades, I have about every maglight, you can have. 7 -cell d's to little 1aaa battery key chains. heck I have 2 , GWH Bush, double A's, given out, for FREE, at the thousand points of light, speech, on the Washington Dc mall.in "88'! { went thru line twice.. nice box , they came in, presidential seal..included, not for sale ..lol. point.. to make.. over the years, I have seen many bulb inprovements. Krypton, Xenon to .. improved, reflectors, etc etc etc. Well sir, I have something tossing CROW,about! with its new This little bulb , with it's new reflector, is so bright, its as bright, as a flash, Bulb, on a old style, camera. has the same sheen as the new reflector, lights, on the latest's automobiles.. it hurts your eyes, at 20-30 feet.. blinding you... focus, is exceptional, esp, on a tight beam.. perfect circle, no stray light, outside the cone of focus..One is now in my wifes, purse, {she loves It}.. I have mounted, two on the defensive weps , for home defense, pistol / rifle. seems to impervious to shock, up to .40 s&w.. hard to find ammo, Now.. what's up with that?the switch. is strong. I have done over 300 cycles.. no failure. I use lithium, batterys. always. it is claimed, 25 hours, of burn, on alkaline, the new lithium's,, claim up to 8 times,more.. unreal. No lanyard, hole, not a factor in my apps..I put my word on it.. this, is awesome.. awesome , is an overused word, but it works here.. i was "SKEPTICAL", AFTER DECADES , of small inprovements.. this shatters the bar..ladies and gentleman....drop in leds just don't burn out..so give it a try. I bought several for stocking stuffers. for gunny and lady friends.. Merry xmas.. {a informed consumer community, helps all of us, not, a gimmick! Rockin Rob

Acceptable - But put your money into a new LED flashlight instead
- Bottom Line - I wanted this conversion kit to a) get a tail cap switch for one-handed operation and b) a brighter light than the old Maglite light bulb. It works acceptably, but you may want to put the money into a new LED flashlight because it does neither tail cap switch or LED brightness very well. --- - Specific points - Regarding the lumens (aka brightness) here are my thoughts. One disclaimer, I don't own an expensive meter or test equipment to measure lumen output, so I am doing this by "eye" against a standard background. a) The LED is noticeably brighter than the old standard Maglite incandescent light bulb. b) However, it is not as bright as a new Maglite LED 2xAA version. From what I could find, if you want a tail cap switch for the Maglite 2xAA, you have two choices. a) This page you're looking at (the LUC2) or b) This other product (NIQ2) <Amazon link: Nite Ize NIQ2-07-1WC Upgrade II, Second Generation 1 Watt L.E.D. and I.Q. Switch, Upgrades AA Mini Mag-Lite from Incandescent to LED Technology with On/Off/Strobe Switch > The LUC2: - This LUC2 product's tail cap switch is kind of cheesy. The cap has no rubber seal to avoid liquid or dirt. It also "feels" kind of loose. I have used other flashlights and their tail cap switches seem more solid. - The tail cap doesn't have a lanyard hole. A lanyard can be handy in my opinion. - Does provide "momentary on". That is: press switch slightly and the light comes on, but release and it goes off. You don't have to press entirely to turn it on and entirely to turn it off. There are times when I want to turn it on and off quickly and I didn't want the switch to be a hindrance. I like this switch for this feature. - This switch can be accidentally switched "on" quite easily. The NIQ2: My dad has this one, and the tail cap slowly blinks dim red continuously when it is electrically connected so you can find it in the dark. Great if you want this, not so great if you don't want constant blinking. To stop the red blinking, you could turn off the electrical connection by twisting the Maglite's focus adjustment, but then you can't turn the light on one-handed with the tail cap switch. This kind of defeats the whole one-handed option. Finally, here are two other (bright) flashlight options with an LED and a tail cap switch. 2 DEFECTIVE only 1 is OK
This is a 11-6-2013 update to my previous review. I bought three of these for my AA MiniMag flashlight delivered on 9-30-13. So I've had these about 1 month. Initially, one of them had the bulb pins break off but two seemed to work OK until today. Then one flashlight just stopped working with this unit in it. Reinstalling the original MiniMag bulb worked fine. I suggest that you DO NOT purchase these as it's hit or miss. Now my miss is 2 out of three. They are UNRELIABLE and may work for a little while. It isn't worth the effort to try to make it work. This is my earlier review when my miss was only 1 out of three. I ordered three units to convert AA Mini-Mags to LED. Two worked and one broke. The light of the new LED is much brighter covering a much wider area than the original bulb. Amazon said they would refund my money for the broken one. When I couldn't get the LED of one to work using the method described below, I pulled it out to try it in another Mini-Mag and one of the two LED pins literally pulled out of the LED unit and is unusable. Before working with the LED, replace the reflective shield in the top part of the Mini-Mag so when the LED is working, you can screw it on. Just as before the replacement, screwing on the top all the way will turn off the flashlight. This kit is really the replacement of the original Mini-Mag light bulb with an LED bulb and a reflective shield in the top with a larger opening for the new LED bulb. The LED bulb is not easy to push into where the previous Mini-Mag light bulb was. For some reason, the replacement LED does not always work as reliably as the original bulb even though the two pins look the same. You can rock the LED from side to side and it might turn on and off indicating a contact problem. This does not occur with the original Mini-Mag bulb. To be sure the new LED bulb is working, insert it into the flashlight with batteries and the original screw-on end (not the replacement on-off end supplied). If the LED lights up just screw on the top. But if the LED doesn't light up, insert the original bulb to see if it is working. If the original bulb lights up, try the LED again. Rocking it back and forth may cause it to light up. You can leave on the original screw-on end or replace it with the new replacement on-off end. Frankly, the new on-off end can be confusing. The Mini-Mag will only light up with the top loosened AND if the new screw-on end in the ON position. If you loosen or unscrew the top as before the change, it will not light up if the screw-on end is in the OFF position. Likewise, if you press the screw-on end to be ON, it will not light up if the top is tightened - the way Mini-Mags worked before the replacement. You can use the original screw-on end with the new LED and it works fine.

Great upgrade.
I've been using my Maglite Mini flashlight for about 6 months now and I really love it. Strong, dependable and works every time. I saw this LED upgrade and thought it was worth a try. The upgrade was a good idea. It provides a switch on the bottom of the flashlight for turning the light off and on which is far handier for me than twisting the flashlight itself to turn it off and on. The LED bulb is brighter than the standard bulb that came with the flashlight but it is not so bright as to be overwhelming as some LED lights can be. You can still focus the beam of the light as before but you don't get quite as much adjustment as before the upgrade. Still plenty of adjustment for me however. The greatest thing is having the switch on the bottom of the flashlight. This feature alone is worth the upgrade.

Works well. Bright as... well, it's bright.
I had bought a LED AA Maglight. I dropped it. It was toast. I decided to retro-fit my older (and more durable, I think) bulb-using AA Mini Mag instead. Now, I have the flashlight I want. It takes a little finessing/carefully forcing a couple of the pieces in place to get them to seat correctly. When I first got the kit, I didn't get it in quite right and the top of the flashlight seemed to barely be holding on by a few threads. I thought I'd wasted my money. Then, thinking maybe I could get it to work if I cut down the leads for the LED just a little, I tried it again (without actually altering anything yet). I got it right this time. The Mini Mag is turned on by twisting the top up, which turns it on and tightens the focus of the beam the more you turn. The new setup comes with an optional replacement base with a pushbutton switch. Use it or don't. The twist method will still turn your light off and on. Using the button only was an issue for me, but only because I wear it in a belt-sheath-thing. Sometimes something would bump the button through the fabric from below and turn it on. A twist on the top of the flashlight fixes that, so no worries. Good product. Would definitely recommend.

Funktioniert wirklich gut!
