Review: Wonderful story collection - Michael Morpurgo is a fantastic writer for children. I’m reading these books bit by bit at bedtime to my 9yr old, but I’m enjoying them as much as she is. The stories all include an element of humanity, and touch on some difficult subjects; animal cruelty, war, child abuse, the death of parents, immigration, to name just a few. These all seem like heavy subjects on paper, but the stories are told so beautifully and with such skill and humanity that the characters jump off the page and keep the reader gripped. Morpurgo introduces children to the cruelty of the world, both past and present, but always presents an alternative to that sadness and each tale is ultimately heartening and positive. But don’t forget your tissues! If you like Morpurgo, I’d also heartily recommend Morris Gleitzman’s stunning ‘Once’ stories, introducing children to the Holocaust, told from the point of view of a Polish Jewish child, Felix. The stories pull no punches but will make you laugh out loud as well as break your heart.
