Based around the revolutionary asymmetrical clipping circuit from the OD-1 Overdrive—one of the three original BOSS compact pedals from 1977—the SD-1 delivers rich, smooth, and highly musical overdrive tones that continue to inspire guitarists everywhere.

Review: Boss SD-1 - Awesome mids-focused OD booster. Asymmetrical clipping adds bite that sounds much more open, natural, and pleasing to me than the famous Tube Screamer circuits (no funky, lingering clean blend sound under this as with TS pedals). Subjective, but between the 2 competitors, I'm on team SD-1 due to functionality and versatility. Good stuff.
Review: The *true* classic OD pedal. - Boss invented the first op amp overdrive pedal with the OD-1 and not long afterwards, Ibanez put out the Tube Screamer, which was basically an OD-1 with a tone control and symmetrical clipping. Not to be outdone, Boss added a tone control to their OD-1 and called it the Super Overdrive and designated it the SD-1. I’ve played modded and unmodded TS circuits and clones and I’ve played modded and unmodded SD-1 circuits and clones. The original still sounds the best to me. Nothing goes as well with a breaking up amp like an SD-1. Nothing kicks a dirt box to the next level like an SD-1 (put it in front of a mid-scooped fuzz for an amazing chunky metal tone, throw it in front of a Rat for a surprisingly good Van Halen brown sound). Single coils, humbuckers, etc. it’s all just grand in that classic way you’ve heard on hundreds of recordings. And it has remained the same for decades. I’ve tried earlier black label units, the most recent SMT version and a few in between, they all sound and act exactly the same to me. If it had a cooler name, it’d be more famous than Ibanez’s world famous green rip off pedal, but as is, these little yellow wonders are brand new for $50 all day long. Save some dough and get the original overdrive. Everything that has come on the scene since owes a debt to this humble pedal, and for my money, nothing does classic overdrive better than the Boss SD-1.

**Q: cord?**
A: It doesn't come with any patch cords and it runs on a battery (although you can get an adapter for it)

**Q: As a boost, does the sd-1 do a good job to tighten things up? for rythm playing especially??**
A: Yes, but it will add some mid range, in a good way tho.

**Q: I'm kind of confused to the manual: am I supposed to turn on my amp first or turn on this pedal first? What about the order of turning everything off?**
A: Start with everything powered "off", or turn the guitar amplifier volume all the way down before plugging or un-plugging any of the gear you are going to connect to it.   Once all cables are connected, then power up the guitar amp and/or slowly bring the volume up. .   Here is one method:  1. Connect cable from pedal output to amplifier input; 2. Connect 2nd cable from guitar jack output to pedal input; 3. Power on the guitar amp and/or, adjust volume; 4. Step on the pedal to activate it, then set the pedal's gain and volume so its level is about the same as or slightly louder than the guitar amp's volume without the pedal activated.  Note: if the pedal's LED doesn't illuminate, check battery or input / output cable connections, you may have to reverse them...

**Q: Can this pedal make a clean amp go heavy?**
A: Not SO heavy, if the amp is totally clean it can get it nice and dirty, a littler crunchy. Blues/rock tones. I use it as a boost in front of a high gain head. If you're looking for a real heavy pedal try an OCD or a Maxon OD808.
