Review: Well mail - Sturdy but over priced. Mush rather have the old Roseville version for 1/2 the $
Review: Replace the fan (or your drives later) - If you have the Silverstone case that this fits, this is what you want for a stock look. I concur with the other reviewer Jacob on several points. 1. The drive doors aren't bulletproof but if you are breaking them then you are doing it wrong. You must have no sense of manipulating mechanical things. Just take your time and don't force things. If something isn't closing or whatever, maybe you have the drive backwards. 2. The fan is definitely GARBAGE. I've had this installed and running for about a year and a half. I remember when I first installed it, thinking "I should replace this cheap fan with a Noctua". Unfortunately, I was too eager to get it running and now a year and a half later, I have a dead fan which I discovered when I was investigating a dead hard drive. Lesson learned. One note about the fan, it's 80mm, but it's only 20mm deep, so if you replace it, you'll probably have to figure out how to get a normal 25mm deep fan mounted where the old fan/shroud was. It's not that hard, and I ended up sealing the fan to the back of the unit using some strips of tape. It's not going to win any beauty pageants but it keeps the drives cool. Also, because the original fan was plugged into the drive enclosure and not the motherboard, I had no feedback that it had died. New fan is PWM, plugged into the mobo and monitored via IPMI. There's certainly cheaper options out there, but if you bought the Silverstone case, you owe it to yourself to get the matching drive bay enclosure.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can the built in fan be replaced?**
A: Technically yes, but we do not recommend it because the built-in fan does not use standard fan connector that you see in retail PC case fans. Please also keep in mind that malfunction occurring after fan replacement may also void warranty.

**Q: Do i need a sas controller with this to use my sas hdds on my gaming pc (aorus z590 ultra motherboard)?**
A: The FS305-12G connectors are just pass-throughs so if your SAS HDDs require SAS controller to operate then they will behave the same when used in the FS305-12G. So the answer to your question is yes, you will need SAS controller to use SAS hard drive in the FS305-12G.

**Q: What is the max drive thickness im wanting to use 5 seagate 20tb ironwolf pros?**
A: The Seagate 20TB Ironwolf Pros are standard sized 3.5" drives with thickness of 26.1mm, which is what the FS305-12G was designed for. They should fit without issues.

**Q: How is this supposed to connect sas drives if the outputs on the back are all sata?**
A: Both SATA and SAS share the same infrastructure the port will support sas if you mini-SAS however you will need an adapter cable as it’s infrastructure is quite different.

Either way you need a SAS controller as well.

### ⭐⭐⭐ Drive bay good - Fan selector bad
*by R***Y on May 20, 2021*

I purchased a SilverStone RM41-H08 4U that came with one of these hard drive enclosures included on the right side. The case was set up for 5.25" drives on the left side, but somewhat easily replaceable with a 3.5' drive bay, so I purchase another enclosure to have 10 available, hot swap, no sled, externally available drives. The drive enclosure has a switch to set the built in fan to high or low. I found low to be quite adequate for my needs, but the second drive enclosure, the one I bought separately would not go to low. The switch moved, but stayed at high. The fan running on high is rather loud. I returned it and got a working model, I thought. I finished the build, racked the unit and powered it up. Both enclosures were running at high. On further inspection the switches do not work on either. The switch will move but the fan stays on high. It's annoying but, I decided to not attempt to remedy the situation and live with the extra noise and power consumption. For those interested (or doing keyword search) this is TrueNAS server with (2) 2.5' SSD boot drives (internal) and (10) 3.5' spinning rust storage drives (external)
