You may be able to stop the fraying if you singe the edge. For years and years now I've been using a plastic "mat" with a spongy backing that came free with a game purchase. It worked decently but I didn't like the overly slick surface or the graphics printed on it (I got really tired of staring at Deathwing for 5 years). I was skeptical about buying a cloth mat, but the Corsair brand always seems to put out quality stuff and it was reviewed well. I picked up the MM200 cloth version. It came rolled in a narrow cardboard box. It feels great to move the mouse over. It's incredibly smooth but still has a little bit of "tooth" to it so it doesn't feel like the mouse is on a skating rink. The Corsair logo at the bottom is tasteful and minimalist. I actually feel like I can confidently say that my aim in FPS games has improved with the help of a mat that offers more control. Seriously. The only issue I had with the mat was that it took a few weeks to really flatten out completely. Who knows how long it was rolled up in that box and one end still had some curl in it for a while. It wasn't bad but once it relaxed it's been fine.
