Review: Favorite author - I have been impressed with all of Doerr's books I've read. He writes with such detail, you feel as if you are there. And the characters are deep, and stay with you long after the last page. I liked the ending in this book, too. I recommend.
Review: COMPLEX STORY OF A MAN WHOSE LIFE IS REDIRECTED BY HIS PROPHETIC DREAMS - This story about a man whose prophetic dreams terrify him and eventually control the events of his life, I find difficult to review. Why? The writing is poetic. The author’s attention to detail, whether it be in describing the pattern of a snowflake, the formation of a cloud or the sound of a wood-boring insect, is inspiring. He allows the reader to enter the mind of David Winkler, to share his terrifying nightmares of road accidents, floods and death by drowning, as well as his obsession with Nature. David is a brilliant scientist who studies water in all its various forms. I therefore found it difficult to comprehend his stupidity when fleeing to a Caribbean island and later trying to locate his daughter; driving halfway around America instead of using the phone and not considering the fact that at 26 years of age his daughter may possibly have married & changed her surname. His frenzied search was the least interesting section of the story. As I have always been fascinated by water myself; in childhood riveted by the pictures of the structure of snow crystals in a book I owned; his descriptions of the natural world were captivating. There were, however, incongruities in the plot around David’s search for his wife & daughter, and also in his five year old grandson’s mile trek on foot through a snow blizzard to a shopping mall alone! David’s relationship with Naaliyah and Christopher were more credible than his short relationship with Sandy. What possessed David to steal another man’s wife and abandon his career? Was his motive overwhelming love? Or was he always mentally unstable? The story leaves many unanswered questions, although overall I found the conclusion satisfying. A beautifully written, complex story by one of my favourite authors. If you have not already done so, read his brilliant short stories as well as “All the Light We Cannot See”

### ⭐⭐⭐ Dreary, dreary, zero character development; not much plot, beautiful writing.
*by J***Y on June 30, 2025*

Loved the prose, but character description and development not included in this book so who knows where they exist. Dark and dreary tale of a flawed but sensitive human who finally gets his just reward in life- is just not enough.
