But additionally, getting the two pieces of the hull to fit together properly also presented a challenge. **Q: how many parts are in kit?** A: Top half, bottom half are one piece.....then window, rear door and some engine pieces, interior has a few parts including chairs, control sticks x4, some panels that glue on easily .....bottom has a circular attachment....so maybe 10-15 small pieces, and 5 larger pieces if you count the window as large. **Q: Does the outside hull require painting?** A: The outside color is yellow but the edge of the fins and the top hatch will have to be painted **Q: Does it actually fly?** A: The model does not fly. However in the TV show, the submarine appears to fly out of the water into the air. Very well done ,and accurate. I decided to add to the detail by getting accessories to enhance it, and it works. The fly sub shooting minature doesn't look better, and that's saying something. That means I have a longer memory of television and what was memorable. Having eventually served in the active Navy, many instances of the script of 'Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea' made me roll my eyes. That doesn't remotely remove the excitement of FS -1 (the Flying Sub) in my memory. I was taken by the prospect of being able to have a large scale model of this iconic TV creation. I was not disappointed. A highly detailed plastic assembly model in 1/32 scale. Admiral Nelson and Captain Crane figures supplied.The assembly sheet needs full attention, but overall a fine attention to detail and I must imagine that a lot of affection went into the construction model and finished product. If you remember the original broadcast or have found the show in DVD release - memories don't get better than having the completed model 'collecting' dust on a bookshelf. I heartily recommend this model kit. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great model for R/C customization *by M***U on March 31, 2015* This is a great model. Out of the box, it is just a display model, but I customized it to be a R/C toy. The 1/32 scale is big enough to add lighting and ballast tanks and underwater motors. (Disclaimer: lighting, ballast tanks, underwater motors are not part of the kit. I'm just telling you how easy it is to start with this static display model and enhance it to be a fully functional model submarine.)
