All four of my trees survived the 3 to 4 month transplant shock phase. With steady watering during a colossal summer drought. Can't say for 100% certain whether it helped or not, but I was successful in starting a new plant. For leaf pulling, I would try to take as much of the white (stem) portion of the leaf as possible. Use sphagnum moss or light potting soil to cover the bottom of the leaves. I always place the entire thing in a plastic baggy at first to keep the humidity high...but keep watch, you don't want it to rot.
