Worth it for Disc 2 ALONE!

*by B***R on Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2018*

I'm not a HUGE BJH fan, although I do like them and own six or seven albums. "Gone to Earth" to me was their "Sgt. Pepper's...", their "Dark Side of the Moon", their "12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus", etc. but the absolutely crap audio quality and terrible mix on any version of it released until now did a great job to hide that fact. This 3-disc rescues "GTE" from purgatory and is absolutely fabulous! It's worth it for Disc 2 alone, a modern remix that is truly a remix -- songs such as "Love is Like a Violin" no longer have two vastly different volume levels where you literally used to have to toggle the volume knob back and forth between "I can't hear it" and "Wow did that get loud!"VERY cool segues appear, for example, between "Hard Hearted Woman" and Woolly's "Sea of Tranquility". New instruments appear, instruments already there are clear and crisp as if someone took the mittens of the recording mics! Disc 1 shows similar correction, but Disc 2 is the reason to invest in this reissue if you loved the original but hated the audio quality. Wow, listen to the fade on "Taking Me Higher! I haven't looked at the credits but whoever did and and the equipment they used to do it with deserve Grammy's for CPR !!!

    Great prog-rock, Moody Blues style

*by M***N on Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2012*

By 1977, BJH was struggling to get noticed in America, but the band's album "Octoberon," released the same year as this disc, finally hit the charts, if only at No. 174. "Gone to Earth" is just as good, featuring the standout songs "Hymn," "Sea of Tranquility" and "Poor Man's Moody Blues"--a parody of "Nights in White Satin" by the Moody Blues that you have to hear to believe. The new CD adds five bonus tracks, including "Lied" (previously unreleased and overlooked), "Hymn" (single version) and "Medicine Man" (live). A good middle place to start with this still-unknown band.

Something New. . . Something Different

*by T***Y on Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2017*

Here's an interesting band to review. Probably not too well known here in the states. A friend's wife turned me on to this band. She's from Germany, and tells me, that she was a fan of this group, while she was living there. I thought that the band's name was rather unique, and decided to explore their music, and delve into their background. Their name comes from three different sources. . . Barclay is the bank in England, where the band is originally from. . . James is the name of their singer. . . Harvest refers to the fact that they, at one time, were all living in an old farmhouse. "Gone To Earth" is the fourth album that I have bought, that this band has recorded. I have come to like their music alot, and would compare it to Alan Parsons Project's "I Robot" or "Tales of Mystery and Imagination". . . The stories of Edgar Allen Poe. One of Barclay James Harvest's songs that comes to mind is a piece titled "Moon Girl". It's very melodic. Some of the album titles that I have been fortunate enough to aquire are "Everyone is Everybody Else", "Time Honoured Ghosts", "Live Tapes", and "Gone to Earth". Sometimes it's a good thing, to open your mind, to new and different music. . . music is like a box of chocolates. . . you never know what you'll get. Check this band out.
