Starting in 1862, the unofficially named 'Flying Scotsman' route operated between the capitals of Scotland and England as a passenger steam locomotive. In 1928, the official Class A1 4-6-2 steam locomotive for London and North Eastern Railway introduced R4472 'The Flying Scotsman'. Cutting the travel time down from 10 1/2 hours down to just a little over 8 hours. The original train has been restored back to its glory days with an occasional memorial run, bringing out fans from all over reminding us of the crowned jewel this locomotive has always been. Troubleshooting a Trainset There are some issues you may encounter with a train set, especially if you are new to this wonderful hobby. These can be broken down into a number of categories, the first will focus on the thing that connects you to your set, the controller. Controller: Your controller will likely be one of two designs, either silver or black, both small boxes with a dial and a direction switch on them. There are only two things of note when it comes to troubleshooting with them both. The first of these is that the direction change switch can only be moved when the dial is all the way at the zero point, providing no power. Many locomotives will stop moving around the 15% mark on the controller and customers will then try to change the direction as the locomotive has stopped, this does not work as the dial is not at 0. The second is a short circuit protection, this activates if the controller detects a short circuit and cuts power from the controller, power then resumes and the set can continue to be used. This cut out will likely occur after a derailment, or if metal crosses the rails such as a dropped coupling hook. Track: Track should be set up on a flat, level, non-fibrous, non-conductive surface. There are some people in the hobby that run their locomotives on a carpet, this is not recommended under any circumstances. Track should be connected with all fishplates correctly assembled resulting in a smooth continuous track with no sudden drops or bumps, with the powertrack in the main loop. When connecting the power lead to the powertrack, the two nubs on the top should be depressed before the prongs are inserted. Track on any surface should be cleaned with a microfibre cloth from time to time, and a track rubber should it lose it’s shininess and you notice impaired performance. Should any stubborn dirt get on the track, methylated spirits and a cotton bud can be used to remove this. Locomotive: All the locomotives wheels should be placed correctly on the track ensuring the flanges are between the rails. If a ticking noise can be heard when in motion, all wheels are not correctly in place. When handling the locomotive, it is imperative that care is taken, and the locomotive should not be held around the valve gear/cylinder area. Incorrect or rough handling in this location could lead to bending of rods, which could lead to buckling the next time power is applied. If you notice any bending or buckling, the locomotive should be returned for inspection immediately.
