Personally, I think the size of the ice that this ice tray makes is perfect for making mixed drinks.

Can it be stored vertically in the freezer?

Its like a regular ice cube tray but with a lid to keep freezer odors out. If you turn it on its side, the water will run out

How high is the tray with the lid on?

The tray with the lid closed is 1 and a 1/2 inches high. Very compact little unit .
