## Description

After opening a convent in the Himalayas, five nuns encounter conflict and tension - both with the natives and also within their own group - as they attempt to adapt to their remote, exotic surroundings.

Review: Great Film, Excellent Blu-Ray - This classic British film about a convent of Anglican nuns living in the Himalayas is a visual feast. It's one of Powell and Pressburger's best ever, winning Oscars for cinematography and art direction, and featuring some of the most startling uses of colour in film history. It also features a couple of captivating performances from Deborah Kerr as the head of the convent, and Kathleen Byron as the smoulderingly unstable Sister Ruth, who gradually [...] and then finally [...] - but look, I'm not gonna give away the plot, am I? But safe to say it's quite dramatic - and was a bit of a shocker for audiences at the time... ; ) Wanted to write a review of this partly to say what a cracking film it is, but also to share that after a bit of research I went for the Network Blu-Ray (light-blue cover with the orange arches & bell) and I'm very pleased with it. Apparently it's a Region B (UK) port of the excellent Criterion US Blu-Ray, and it looks fantastic, really capturing the vibrant colours of the original. I gather the ITV version is very good as well, but it was only a couple of quid extra for the Network, and I haven't regretted it.
Review: Stunning 1940s British made drama - I thoroughly enjoyed this film for a number of reasons. First and foremost there's the stunning cinematography and use of technicolour. The whites of the painted mountain peaks adding dramatic contrast to the interiors. The story, characters, and acting too are impressive in that they are meaningful and contrasting. Kathleen Byron is terrific as the demented sister Ruth and the film brilliantly explores sexual and racial tension in a mature way. The film isn't perfect and I just like to mention that some aspects of the casting(esp Jean Simmons), and one or two of its attitudes(race, mental illness) may raise eyebrows for one or two watchers. On the whole, for me, a beautiful and sometimes powerful movie that looks wonderful on this 2014 bluray restoration.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Just order this, you won't be disappointed!

This Blu-Ray version of BLACK NARCISSUS is truly fantastic. There have been DVD releases in the past in Australia, but they were from ordinary (probably ex TV) masters, so the full vibrancy and colours of this outstanding film were lost. But not now. The added bonus of this release is the terrific 'making of' documentary, which seems to have been made in the last 10 years, bringing back some of the stars and anecdotes of the filming. Great fun which provides an insight into the film-making processes of the time. If you are interested in film, great story-telling and especially great transfer's of Technicolor productions, just order it, you won't be disappointed.
