I bought this 3d pen set for my then 8 yr old granddaughter for her bday 2 years ago this week. She told me all about it before I bought it, but I thought she may lose interest. SHE CONTINUES TO LOVE IT AND USE IT all the time!! Loved that!! She would call and tell me she needed more filament, and I’d send her more. It uses the standard size (thickness) of filament, so that was easy to find! She made me gifts, she uses it with parents, and stays engaged. Last week she was so disappointed it finally died. Her dad ordered her this same kit and she’s back to it. Her bday is next week-she asked for more filament and maybe a mat, too. She has brought it to my house for us to do together. I don’t notice any noise, and never any clogging. The pen fits well in her hand and in mine, nice size. There may be a slight odor, but nothing strong or off-putting. This is one of the few gifts that she hasn’t lost parts for or lost interest. I’d say it has been an awesome value!!

This is probably going to be the most in-depth review I have ever wrote on Amazon. I am doing this because I feel like it is important for when you are shopping for 3D pens. This will cover the PLA that the pen comes with, and also PLA I bought elsewhere and why I have chosen what I have. ------------------- My first impressions: I am surprised at how light the pen is. I have small-ish hands for a 5'1" woman and it felt very comfortable to hold. After reading the instructions, it states that if the PLA crackles or bubbles while the using the pen, to lower the temp. Sure, no problem right? Not really. I use wax paper to trace my designs on, I use this due to a youtube video which suggested it, and its a lot cheaper than the mats. I also prefer it over mats because it is paper thin, which gives me the most accuracy of my tracing which is important to me. I started using the pen at the default 190f. As I was using it, I noticed that the PLA did crackle in the pen, and it did form bubbles. As advised by the instructions I turned it down lower. The lowest point for PLA is 160f according to the instructions, however, it would not stick to the wax paper at all. I then tried 170f and again, the PLA would not stick to the wax paper as well as it had with the 190f. Once more I turned it up to 180f, it stuck, not as well as I would like but it was a lot better than the other settings. Also, at the lower settings it gives no time at all to adjust the plastic if you need to nudge or squish down a bump. Changing the PLA: After using most of the PLA given in the kit, I went out and bought from a local small buisiness (SUPPORT THEM!) which uses locally sourced PLA. Once more, I tried the 190f temp setting. Not only does the PLA come out much smoother, it sticks to the wax paper perfectly, and I am noticing my pen does not get near as hot using it. I can use it for much longer before deciding to give it a break. This means I can nudge the PLA, and bend it and it sticks well to my wax paper so it does not shift on me while working. I also notice that it is much less stringy than the PLA the pen comes with. PLA brand matters, and it is good to research into a good PLA, I am just glad our local PLA works this nicely. TIPS: Bonus, a tip to enjoy your pen even more. You can get a lot more use out of your pen with various other tools. A wood burner with temp control and multi tips is wonderful for shaping and smoothing your project after you had made it. Use aluminum foil covered in painter's tape to fill in big gaps to use less PLA. A course sand-paper followed by a smoothing sand paper also helps in finishing off the nice smoothness of the PLA. As stated before, Wax Paper is a wonderful material to work on. It could be used repeatedly until it eventually tears and painter's tape peels off it nice so you can adjust and move it. Look for some good youtube videos to get you started on techniques to best build your 3D Pen creations! Overall: This is a very nice pen for its cost, you can adjust the temp, its light and comfortable, also easy to use. Pictures provided show the projects I have made with this pen for my D&D sessions. The PLA that I bought works wonderful for being painted right on without any primer. If you are curious, I use 3D Fuel PLA. Someone suggested not to work it too hard, giving it a break every 30min or so, I think some times I do go closer to an hour. Always press the up button and get your PLA fully out before you turn it off (by unplugging it). Always trim the tail off the PLA. I have yet to run into any of the issues of it clogging or just turning off. Only twice did it seem to "turn off" and I think my PLA had nudged the cord since it curls, because it would auto go back to temp after.

I was skeptical at first but my grandson figured out how to make random objects. He got very good at it. I was shocked at how easy it was to use.

I will say that it came lightning fast - I ordered it last night and it was at my door this morning! I am a pretty handy person, having done some very nice wire wrapping, fine needlework, and crafted tiny things with a sure hand. Before ordering this, I watched YT videos on how to load the filament and trace an image overlayed with wax paper, and I saw people completing complicated, multipart objects with apparent ease. So, I felt ready to sit down with my new tool this morning, with a firm idea in my head of how I envisioned the finished product. What I wound up with was SO far off the intention that it is laughable. It's going to take a lot more practice before creating something that looks halfway decent. First of all, you need to be working on a surface that will catch the hot filament and allow it to be applied to a shape. It is like the difference between writing your name in ink on a piece of paper, or a piece of glass. I thought parchment paper would be suitable. It was not. OK, so wax paper it is. Even with the right kind of surface material, the hot filament does not necessarily extrude at an even pace. It might come out too quickly and bunch up, or trail off into thin hairs, so it is a bit hard to work with right off the bat. It will be interesting to see how long this thing remains functional -- except for a warning sign before complete failure, nobody has mentioned strange whistling noises or popping/crackling noises -- is that normal? It's better than a good idea - it would be a great idea if it were easier to handle right out of the box. Nevertheless, it will be good for some fun, and one might even produce something useful with it. I'm not quite there yet, but regardless how long this particular one lasts, I don't plan to go without one of these for very long -- there's will always be SOMEthing you can make with it.

The pen works great. My daughter really loves it. The only thing is we wish it came with more filament. She flew through the three colors it came with but we will definitely be ordering more so she can continue to use it!

i bought this 3d pen on june 1st for my grandkid but he ended up loveing it so much that he bought more colors it worked right out of the box no defect but i noticed that when the cord moves it cools down and needs to go back to its original tempeture but other than that the pen works great

I bought this 3D pen for my daughter because she loves arts and crafts, and the price seemed very reasonable. Before ordering, I did notice that several reviews mentioned the pen not working out of the box, but I decided to take my chances because most people still seemed happy with it. Unfortunately, the first one I received clearly had a defect. It wouldn’t start working no matter what I tried, and part of the charger was missing from the box. I ended up returning it the same day and ordering the exact same one again. The second pen worked perfectly, and once we got a working one it’s actually a lot of fun. My daughter really enjoys using it, and we even ordered a 3D activity book to get more ideas for projects. It’s a creative toy and great for kids who like drawing and building things. That said, I had to go through the hassle of returning the first one, and judging by other reviews it seems like some units just don’t work. Because of that inconsistency, I can’t give it a higher rating. If you get a good one, it’s great. Just be aware that you might have to exchange it if you get a defective unit.

Bought 2 of these for the grandkids for Christmas and they loved creating with them. Easy to use and refill There are so many videos out there you can watch to help you get creative with it you just have to do a little research

Absolutely awesome, bought as a birthday gift and it was her favourite gift. She is really enjoying using it. Highly recommend!

This 3D pen is a fun and surprisingly intuitive tool to get started with simple 3D drawing. The display and controls make it easy to adjust settings, and it heats up quickly so you can start using it almost immediately. The included filament and guide are a nice bonus for beginners. Once you get used to it, it’s great for small creative projects, decorations or even simple repairs. It’s not overly complicated but still offers enough control to make it enjoyable for both kids and adults.
