Rainbird has just the tool for that: it's called the "Rainbird PTC1 -- Spray Head Pull Up Tool". desertcart sells it for about $11, and it's well worth the expense. The tool makes it easy to pull the riser out of the ground and clamp it in the extended position while you install the nozzle. Review: Inexpensive but Effective - Using these on the 7 foot wide area between the sidewalk and street. 15 heads on the same zone so these HE models are ideal using less GPM, keeping the PSI up and good throw distance. The adjustable distance or radius allows you to turn them down much farther than what they’re rated at. Having such adjustability allows you to minimize overspray and get nice even coverage. I used these to replace Hunter 8A Pros which were hard to adjust in that when turning the top screw it would turn the arc adjustment top outer ring at the same time. With 15 of the higher GPM Hunters on the same zone the heads wouldn’t even pop up, or were very weak distance. It’s been a lot of trial and error optimizing my sprinklers from the original install when the house was built. Great head to head coverage like never before, might need to run for just a bit longer to get the same precipitation in inches as other models. Make sure your heads don’t need to be raised up, I keep the mower deck high in the summer. With the added grass length it can block the spray.
