## Description

How to use: Press the 'MODE' button to cycle through the selection of functions. H: High, constant, non-variable flow (3,400 gph) L: Low, constant, non-variable flow at a third of the speed (1,100 gph) W1: Short pulses which, when timed correctly will create a back and forth motion and form a gentle standing wave in your tank. Adjust the controller to change the speed of the pulses and vary the size of the wave according to your tank. W2 & W3: Pump gradually speeds up and slows down incrementally to create a varied flow pattern. Adjustable to form the wave best suited to your tank. Else: Reef Stream Mode, a mixed, changing pattern that creates a random flow cycle similar to what you would find in a natural reef. Feed: Press the 'FEED' button once, the blue '10min' light will illuminate indicating that the pump has been stopped for 10 minutes. When the time has elapsed, the light will go off and the pump will be turned back on. Alternatively, press the 'FEED' button again to start the pump. Lock: To prevent changes from inadvertently occurring by accidentally knocking the adjustable control knob, press and hold the 'FEED' button for 5 seconds. The red 'LOCK' light will illuminate and the control knob will no longer function. Press and hold the 'LOCK' light for a further 5 seconds to disable this feature. *Night: When the two-pinned sensor is inserted into the two small plugs on the left-hand side of the control box, Night mode will function automatically. The sensor detects when the tank lights go out and slows the pump to half speed. The 'Sensor' light will illuminate when Night mode is in operation. To disable the Night mode function, remove the sensor from the control box.

Why pay $485 for a Vortech MP40 Wavemaker?

*by M***Y on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 2, 2014*

I bought this for my 90 gallon reef tank, that had a Rio 1400 , a Aquaclear 50 and a no-name 275GPH powerhead in it already for circulation.I was impressed by the amount of positive reviews that this unit had almost everywhere and took the plunge. What struck me initially was the large SIZE of the unit. Just the impeller and housing without the magnetic assembly is the size of a softball. The power cord for this unit is round and fairly thick and is well attached. The 24Volt power supply ( yep ! it uses a DC motor ) looks almost exactly like a laptop power supply. Be aware that there is a tiny photocell in a plastic bag , DO NOT THROW IT OUT! It is your photocell for night-time control of the unit. Be gently when putting it into the two hole inlet that it plugs into on the side of the controller.., take your time. The WP40 comes with a controller with twelve or more multicolored LED's to indicate constant speed, Wave type ( W1 to W3 ) and a mode called ELSE ( random pulses and speeds) and finally the impeller or flow speed ( S1 to S3 ) . These can be manually selected, and there is also a 10-Min FEED button and LOCK to lock system settings. The controller also has a rotary knob that can be used to vary the frequency of the waves or pulses produced. The 3-pin connection cord from the powerhead to the controlled is first class (thick ) and connects with a "O" ring screw-on seal for a water tight connection. Nice.., to say the least.Aesthetically and functionally, the controller works well and for the price point $76.00 versus the $485.00 Vortech ,the controller is well made and is easy to operate.Mounting the WP40 is an exercise in knowing where you want it because moving it afterward can be a tad hard as the magnets used to secure it are super strong. This pump WILL NOT move a millimeter once secure! I suggest about 90% up on your tank towards the front pointing slightly to the front glass. Know however that your tank's aquascape and rock stability will be tested the minute you plug it in. You will, of course, need to avoid the tank water sloshing outside of the tank on your floor. I kid you not, this pump will move water!. Also in ELSE mode be prepared for a dust storm and sand shifting as this mode initially seems like a little hurricane and cleans\stirs up a lot of old detritus initially.Start at W3 speed ( the slowest ) and try each mode. I did not experiment with the rotary knob for pulse frequency of the Wave modes, I likes a simple back and forth. Experiment to your hearts delight however. You may find that you will have to mount the pump opposite of where you initially set it IF it stirs up and then piles up the sand in one area. That was what I had to do.In ELSE mode there is no real pronounced wave sway BUT the pulses are indeed random (yep! you can hear em) and it's a mode I think I will run three days a week. I've found it ( ELSE) to be a nice "clean the rocks of detritus mode ( select S2 for an hour or two initially ), It really cleans up the tank's rocks and sand and is varied. I do like W1 at S3 speed alsoMy photocell works fine but I would keep the controller in the open where some sort of very minute ambient light is available. If you have problems with the photocell and needing ambeint light , try mounting a plain sheet of white paper by the controller as a reflector for the photocell. Mine is activated once my bright lights go out and is mid level with my 90 gallon and about 5 inches away mounted on a wall. I simply LOVE this feature as being a SCUBA diver and living in the Caribbean for 20 years, I can tell you that most times the reefs have less current\waves at night.....,most times. As far as noise, you can hear the pump. Is it loud?...., nope, not really. If you have a noisy tank to start with, it will be drowned out. My 90gal is very quiet so I can hear the pump ever so slightly.Do the corals react to the pump?. Most definitely "YES" and in a positive way. The fish will dig it too. ( yeah I'm old ...,"dig" ) Because of the power of this pump I was able to take out two heat producing powerheads. I like that because my tank is out in my garage and heat can be a problem. I maintain 79-82F with a fan and have lots of evaporation ,but it's easier now that these two powerheads are gone. Nice side benefit to meIn summary, this wavemaker is one of those things that empowers us poor folks to affordably run with the $485.00 outrageously expensive Vortech owners. I NEVER planned to own a VOrtech since I could not see how in God's name it justified such a price. When my Son told me about the Jaebo and I saw his WP10 in his 20 gallon Biocube , I just had to have one.I'm glad I bought it.If you have stock shares in Vortech... time to sell.Even if it dies in a year, at $76.00 versus $485.00..., it begs the question

Great fan for water movement, Night Mode adapter NEEDS improvement.

*by J***H on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on March 16, 2015*

I purchase tons of items on Amazon and rarely write a review. This wavemaker is pretty awesome. I have it in my 180 gallon, I am using one and it moves the water great. I've had my eye on the Vortech mp60 for a long time and to be honest, this fan for this price is just as sufficient without spending $700.00, granted you don't get all the bells and whistles of the Vortech but if you're looking for water movement, this is the fan.I only gave it 4 stars because the night mode adapter is less than desirable. the metal prongs that you insert are very flimsy and bend with the slightest touch. Also the photo sensor is not good either, the light from the control panel itself keeps it from going into night mode in a pitch black living room, I found by putting a piece of black electrical tape over the light worked but then the adapter broke after I've finagled it a few times so now I leave the fan in W1-S2 mode constantly.I have so much water movement, with a good undertow that my nitrates and ammonia are at zero, there are no dead spots in the tank at all.I have not looked into getting a replacement night adapter yet and will follow up with process that it takes, if they are cheap enough, I'll probably buy 3 or 4 just to have, they are that flimsy and prone to bending!

    Moves water well!

*by B***F on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on March 25, 2014*

I bought this for my 120 gallon reef aquarium and very happy with the flow. I have a very nice wave motion that is more than just superfical water surface movement; it reaches down deep into the tank to the sand bed, between rocks, and through crevasses. The controller isnt the easiest thing to use and the speed control doesnt work for all modes. For the cost the build quality, performace, and control can not be touched by any other right now. I think the manufactures of the pricy pumps are scared becuase everyone i know is getting these pumps and loving them! This is one aquarium purchase you will not regret.I have the pumps mounted in the far corvers at oposite sides of the tank facing the oposite corner. The flow crashes into the flow from the other pump and drives in all directions. Ive got 100 pounds of LR in the display and there are no dead spots. I couldnt ay that with the one MP40 I had on it years ago before I sold it. I have it set to W1 (wave one) and S2 (speed 2 ~75% of max) and the interval is set with the knob until i get the wave back and forth motion I want. The flow is gental and wide spread so it dosent blast coral or the sand but it is power full. I can feel it when I put my hands in the tank. I am so happy with these pumps and the cost. Now I can get my SPS coral without worring about if I have enough flow. This problem is solved!
