Very Advanced Android Programming: Hold On to Your Hat
I have eight other Android books and only one has the depth of this book. Of the 20 chapters in this book 15 are devoted to advanced application operations. This is not a book for beginners, this is a book for the adventurers that want to bring every possible feature of Android out into the light and see how their device can perform. This territory is for the prepared mind. If you want to know more about beginning to use Eclipse to build Android programs or how to do elegant widget design you must read one of those other introductory books. There is enough material in the 400 pages of this book to keep an experimenter working on upgrading his applications for months. You can try out multi-threading and running simultaneous applications that talk to each other and the web. Use the NDK to find the maximum performance of your device or open up new interfaces and automatically record actions and the resulting computed data records into the database. Link your device to others and form a mobile computing cluster or provide a six way video conference between different offices across the country. Even use one device as an aerial platform controller and video observer for another device in the hand of its pilot. You could even try using one device as a submarine controller and connect it to a remote control device using acoustic signals with the help of digital filters. The phrase "smart phone" is simply a euphemism for a multi-core computer with advanced sensor arrays. This book will open your eyes to the ways that these devices can be employed in support of modern technology. What kind of application would allow a mobile super-computer to come into existence? How many phones would be needed, 50, 5000, 500000? Not a problem, a smart programmer could get all this computing power for free.I'm thinking of integrating my house with my car into my phone. Then I'm going to connect "Jeeves" to my home and office computers just so I don't have to leave myself spread across four different contact and document applications. I'm going to build a background trapdoor into my community website so I can get service notices and communicate with my community group seamlessly. This book is going to make it possible to upgrade my entire social situation. What might it do for your life? Let your mind be the only limit to your life with this book.

Experienced coders take note, especially if you're new to Android/Java
This is how you write a competent tech book, folks! I've only read a couple chapters so far but that's because they immediately arm and inspire me to try things out. Erik speaks directly without talking down or worshiping the reader. I've never been deeply involved with Java but I'm an experienced programmer and this gets me the knowledge quickly and efficiently. Just what I wanted! I only wish this had been the first book I bought on Android.

Nice book for anyone who want to become advanced android developer
If you have programmed in Android before and heading for the advanced level, this is the right book for you!(1) Up to date, introduces you the newest thing in Android.(2) It doesn't use redundant paragraphs. Clearly explain a topic within a couple of pages.(3) Many of the knowledges come from real world developing experience, you won't get them from Android documents.I learned a lot from this book!

A Lot Covered, But Not Much Depth
Somewhat dated in January 2017, but a lot of the content still applies. It's a odd mix of advanced and basic concepts, the latter which should be already familiar to the audience reading this book. A lot of material is covered, but it's skimmed to a great extent. The example code is mostly bit and pieces without supporting resource files so it's tough to build the code examples. I got about 1/3rd through the book before moving on.

Good book for advanced programmers
Good book for advanced programmers, it touches a lot of features, some are in details others are just an overview. But good book to have in general.

Beyond the basics
If you read all the entry level books for Android and already released a couple of Android apps to Google Play this is the book for you. This book does not cover Android basics but instead tries to address all those questions you end up asking after you understand and use the most common concepts and APIs
