Having used both the TI-84 and the Casio FX line extensively I would definitely say it's worth it to save a couple bucks for books or dorm supplies and go with the Casio. You need fxremote software and o.s. image files. Dead easy to get hold of and free-of-charge. O.S. images files can be obtained from a well-known French site which is an authority on Casio calculators. Go to main menu and system on your calculator, then select version. If the last four digits of your o.s. are 0200, then you've got one of the older fx9750gii calculators which are particularly easy to upgrade. If it ends 0201 or 0701, then it is one of the later types. For 0200, the best o.s. to upgrade to is version 2.04, which includes vectors. On the French site, this o.s. is labelled as 3073patched. If your calculator is of the later type, then use version 2.05. although principally designed for exam compliant calculators for the French market, it also includes a battery check and ECON3 over ECON2 (very slightly better) and automatic parenthesis. On the French site, this one is currently labelled: g95_g75_fx9860giish4_02.05.0000_2015.... FxRemote comes with full instructions. Do remember, however, NEVER use an o.s. image file (typically designated sh3) designed to be used for upgrading an older model of fx9750gii on a later model and vice-versa. If you do, your calculator dies!! If yours is a later one, you need an image file labelled .sh4. Version 2.05, however, is not available for older calculators. The Algebra and CAS add-on packages are also obtainable from the French site. To install them, you need FA124, device managment software, which can be dowloaded from the Casio site, free-of-charge. If you've got an older fx9750gii, you can also add a third cas package - Symbolix. There really is too much to be said about the strengths and weaknesses of each of these but in brief: Algebra is best for integration, CAS for differentiation and Symbolix is best for polynomial devision. Algebra often causes your calculator to reboot if it can't perform the task, but this does no harm (the others do not). This particular model lacks natural/textbook entry, which may be an issue for some, but it has all the basics, and is faster than similar TI products. The screen resolution is fairly low, but it’s readable. It does the job, and the price is right. It took me about an evening to figure this thing out, but this is not my first calculator by a long shot. The good: - fast - covers the basics. - runs a long time on 4 AAA batteries. - the calculator feels sturdy. - fairly easy to learn (in my opinion) Not so good: - low resolution screen - no internal flash memory to back up to - it’s too easy to turn the calculator on, a recessed power switch would be nice. (The competition has the same problem) - no data transfer software for the Mac (the newer Casio Prizm models do not need any special software, you can drag and drop files) If the budget will stretch that far you may want to take a look at the Casio FX-CG50. It has a higher resolution color screen, supports textbook entry, has more memory, it’s even faster and it works with a Mac. TI can get away with charging higher prices because they spent real money on teacher resources and training, and getting their calculators included in classroom materials.
