Well we found a way to check it out, and indeed, the unit does work very well. My husband took the unit to the garage, and then drove our car into the garage, turned off the engine and shut the door down. He waited a minute or less and the unit indeed detected a small amount of CO (15ppm - see picture). Because it was under 35 ppm, the unit did not alarm, but at least we now know it really does work. I would never suggest you try to check your unit by running your car in a closed garage. We were just measuring the fumes from an engine that was switched off, just as if you came home, parked and turned off your car, got out and shut the garage door. We are very happy with how the Kiddie Nighthawk CO detector works and are very glad to have it in our home - great peace of mind from a great product that we wouldn't hesitate to recommend to others. We had the local fire chief come to our house for a complimentary visual inspection of our preparedness for a fire/smoke/ or monoxide issue. He said that when we replace our 20+year old alarms that he strongly suggested we replace them with one that gives the ACTUAL reading and not just a beep. He said that then when they would respond to our house, we can give him the reading that shows on the alarm. This particular alarm does give these readings and that is why we selected it over others that we looked at. He told us that "extra" bit of information would be of much value to the responders to our house. They are quite nice to look at as well. One concern that I had was would this particular alarm take up both of the outlet plugs (due to the size). I did not want it to because I have to plug in my vacuum cleaner. Anyway, it was not an issue at all. It only takes up the bottom one and the top outlet is totally accessible for other appliances to plug into. I see a lot of reviews showing old out of date units received.** A: Ordered in January 2017. Date of manufacture: October 2003. People must be careful when ordering these, especially from third party sellers. I bought one from a third party seller for a ridiculously low price -- big mistake, as the unit was over 13 years old! (Note: The date of manufacture is on a label on the BACK of the unit, which is not visible when the unit is encased in its original packaging. There is no way to know the date of manufacture unless you physically remove the unit from its hermetically sealed packaging and examine the label on the back of the unit.) **Q: Can the alarm funtion be disabled? i want to use in a space where i want higher than normal levels of co2.** A: Do NOT simply clip one wire to the transducer as in a smarter device a monitoring voltage may discover the alarm is disabled and disarm the monitor entirely. Depending on construction, you also should not remove any coating from a pcb and unsolder the correct terminal. That would probably break the alsrm and a federal statute. **Q: The Kiddi web site says this has a 10 year life and 10 year warranty for this model900-0076. Are these old ones that your selling?** A: My old one lasted 7years 5 days 36 minutes. I just put the new models in and they work fine. As far as how long they warranty 10 years. **Q: Can someone explain how to insert the battery?** A: Remove unit from packaging and turn unit so the AC power connector is facing you. There is a U shaped section around the AC connector with a series of dashes on both upright section. Push both of those towards the opposite end of the unit. This will unlock the U shaped cover. Remove the cover. My unit came with mounting screws and a drier pack that where inside the battery compartment. The connector for the battery is visible after removing the items in the compartment.
