I searched everywhere for my Lodge Cast Iron grill, but alas... I guess it got lost or stolen in the move. Man, I shed tears over that old fella! But you know what? Whoever stole my Lodge Sportsman's Grill... THANK YOU! Although The Lodge Sportsman's Grill was exellent, I think I have found the perfect grill. On 3 occassions in my life, I have had backyard cookout Que that was so good, it made me do a happy dance. On two of those occassions, I was mystified to look across the yard to see what looked to be 2 washtubs on top of each other (Old Smokeys). I don't know why this grill produces BarBque on par with a $1,000 dollar Big-Green-Egg, Weber etc. but it does! I think it has something to do with the very simplistic build of the grill. It some how reflects even, radiant heat from all sides of the interior, while also circulating huge volumes of smoke. If you love smoke rings and smokey flavor, this is the grill for you. Depending on how much you open the top draft, what type of wood or charcoal you use, and cooking time... This grill will SMOKE your Que along with searing,broiling. It's just a question of how much smokyness you will get. I missed the grill marks from my Lodge Grill, so I purchased the Char-Broil Cast Iron Universal Grill Grates. Problem solved! The Char Broil grate also fits the larger Old Smokey #22. So, now I have the best of both worlds... I can get the cast iron, sear marks my Lodge Sportsmen produced along with the smoked flavor of The Old Smokey #18 Grill. I think the Charbroil Grill Grate was only around $34 bucks, much cheaper than the others I came across. Cons: I can't even put into words how delish the meat is from this grill, but it does have a few small flaws worth mentioning. 1. The bottom draft-hole can not be seen! You can not tell if it is open or closed while grilling. I used a Sharpie Marker to make lines at the bottom of the grill to indicate open and closed. 2. The edges of the legs and draft-doors on this grill are very sharp, so be carefull during assembly. 3. I really love this grill, and like showing it off; It would have been nice to have a metal emblem on it, instead of a tape decal that will eventually burn off... Better advertisement, too. Old Smokey, are you listening? 4. I am planning to take the advise of another Reviewer and substitute wing nuts for the legs of the grill, that way it can be quickly made more portable for the tailgate, beach, picnic, etc. That would have been a nice touch out of the box. IJS.. These are very small issues for a grill that simply can not be beat. Add to your shopping cart... Trust me, it'll be one of the best purchases you ever made! P.S. This grill's huge lid gives you enough clearance for perfect beercan chicken. I gave my 10yr old "ole smokey" to some friends to take on a weeks trip to the lake. they used it every day and fell in love with it. I bought me a new one and they kept my old one. Save yourself lots of cash and still achieve great grilling and smoking. There are only two air adjustment holes so it takes a little trial and error. This will produce the same results as a Weber for a fraction of the price. Its simple to modify, ( I moved the grill racks around a little inside).
