Functional Alternative for Wii U Pro; Ruined by Imprecise Dead Zones

*by D***. on Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2016*

There aren't many Wii U Pro Controller alternatives on the market, most third party options work as a Wii Classic Controller (via Wiimote attachment) which has a very different set of supported games than the Wii U Pro. This definitely works as far as compatibility goes, the Wii U will treat it like any other Pro Controller. The perks of course are the Gamecube-like ergonomics and that it's almost half the price.Overall, it works. Battery doesn't last as crazy-long and it feels maybe a little bit cheap materials-wise, but honestly not bad. I have no issues with the buttons, everything feels all right and seemed responsive. I suppose my only complaint in terms of feel is that it feels *unique*, which is detriment to how it's marketed. It's not a bad design by any means, but the fact is it feels neither quite like a Wii U Pro Controller nor a Gamecube Controller (I regularly switch between both). So if you're expecting to be able to comfortably use this as just a modern Wavebird, it may not feel as instantly comfortable as you may expect. It's not bad, it's just a bit different. With use, you'll adjust. For some that's a dealbreaker, particularly serious Smash Bros players trained to the Gamecube design. However, that'd still be a 4-star device to me. The killer is the dead zones on the control stick. When this controller originally shipped it had SEVERE dead zone issues that made it outright unusable. I bought mine following reports Hyperkin addressed that and some buyers confirming great improvements. Indeed, it's very usable now for what I suspect is the majority of games. However, it still most definitely does *not* match the dead zones of official controllers and *will* affect any game sensitive to such issues (like Smash Bros). I became suspicious pretty quickly after playing a few games and after extensive testing confirmed the differences were notable enough they often produced very different directions/moves compared to the same movements on other controller options. I suspect the Gamecube-style octagon around the control stick may play a role in the problem, as all Wii U controllers are designed to be capable of movement in a complete circle.Dead zone issues are nefarious, because they are subtle and affect different players and games in different ways to different extents. Minor dead zone issues can easily make something that's normally very easy to do in a game suddenly incredibly frustrating. Although many players may be able to enjoy some games w/o noticing much issue, unfortunately I cannot recommend this controller to anyone given the risk it may subtly ruin some otherwise enjoyable game for you. The whole design concept seems targeted towards fans of the Gamecube controller, who are probably Smash Bros players, and for them the issues are most likely to be apparent and can only hinder them competitively compared to an official Wii U Pro.

The best way to play games on the Wii U

*by K***I on Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2016*

I have long considered the Gamecube controller to be the best controller ever designed. Unfortunately, Nintendo has made the Gamecube controller compatible with only the new Smash Bros Game, and likely not because fans wanted it, but rather because for large scale tournaments, the Bluetooth wireless controllers can cause interference. So, if you wanted to use the Gamecube controller, you had to turn to one of the wired accessories, such as the HORI or PDP Gamecube styled controllers that work as an accessory to the Wiimote. The problem is, not all games are compatible with the Wiimote/classic controller accessory. So you were stuck. But now Hyperkin has solved the problem entirely, introducing a Gamecube styled controller that is recognized by the Wii U system as a Pro Controller, and is thus compatible with every game. The reason the Gamecube controller is better than the Wii U pro controller is two-fold for me. First, the face buttons. A/B, X/Y are in a diamond configuration that requires sometimes uncomfortable or unintuitive shifting of your hand to hit the far left button. However, the Gamecube solves that problem by positioning the buttons in a more natural way that fits the shape of the thumb, making pressing each button more comfortable and fluid. Second, the analog stick placement. On the new Wii U Pro controller, they put both analog sticks at the top of the controller. Most games, though, require your left thumb to be on the control stick and the right one to be on the face buttons, with only occasional use of the right analog stick for camera control. Thus, with the Wii U Pro controller, you have to play with your right hand lower on the controller, which makes using the shoulder buttons uncomfortable. This controller design solves both of those problems. This controller is, in my opinion, the best way to play games on the Wii U. It is compatible with all games the regular Pro Controller is, and at $20 less. It is great for people who remember playing and loving the Gamecube, and younger players, as it provides a better experience than the pro controller does.

The BEST 3rd Party Wii U Controller

*by G***G on Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2016*

This controller is absolutely incredible. Normally I'm very apprehensive about getting 3rd party controllers, but for $30 (at the time of this review) I decided it was worth it to bite the bullet and give this thing a fair chance. I'm happy to say I am not disappointed. The buttons are very responsive, the bumpers and triggers are very "tight" (I say that because I feel Nintendo's own pro controller's L/R/ZL/ZR buttons are very soft and poor) and don't feel the slightest bit flimsy, and bizarrely enough (after years of the Gamecube controller) clicking the control stick and C-stick takes some getting used to.If I did have to make a minor complaint, it would be that the D-Pad just sucks (I joke that it's a perfect recreation of the original Gamecube D-pad), and the control stick feels somewhat loose. I played Twilight Princess HD and Smash with this thing, and while it didn't affect it TOO much (your precision in Smash will be slightly off), the feeling of the stick being floaty and somewhat loose IS there. Also, I feel I should mention this because I feel that someone will ask, but no, you cannot use this with the Wii mode. Remember that this is a pro controller and therefore only works on Wii U.
