does this use any AAA batteries?

Batteries came with it! And yes any AAA batteries.

Does this headlamp have the ability to angle down for running?

Yes, it does. You can angle it down up to 90 degrees so it shines on your toes.

Do these work well with lower voltage nimh rechargeable batteries? i've had too many devices destroyed by leaking alkaline batteries.

They work with any battery... however if you have a history of leaking batteries you should take the batteries out after use and put them aside. Apparently you are buying cheap batteries, or not using your device often enough. I am a jet mechanic and use my nightly, so I get new batteries twice a week.
