How far away will it pick up? I'm a classroom teacher and I need it to pick up my students who are not close.

The best pickup distance is about 3-8 inches. I'm afraid this mic won't capture the student voice clearly. Though we have a wireless USB handheld mic K034 (Asin: B073JLFYX8). You can pass the wireless mic to student to while the USB is still plugged in your computer to receive audio signal to get it recorded or amplified out.

Does it need any phantom power or anything of that type?

The is a USB microphone. Connectivity to the PC and power is delivered over a single USB port.

What setting do you need to change for USB external microphone?

Normally, you have no need to change the setting. Because it's plug and play， computer will recognize it automatically. But if there's no sound comes out, you will need to change the sound setting, select this mic as input device instead of the bulit-in mic.
