2-5, but I think the sweet spot is really 2.5-3.5 or maybe up to 4.

Why is there a pink tax on this item?

For those who do not know what a pink tax is, it's when things cost more for females than the same thing costs for men, i.e., haircuts, dry cleaning, shirts/blouses, etc etc etc. The pink laptop costs several dollars more than the black one, which traditionally would mean that the one "for girls" has a "pink tax" added just because it's for girls.

is it a back lighted screen?

It changes colors. But without the backlight, no. There is a light button on it, and has 4 colors I think!

How does this compare to the Leapfrog laptop? My son is 16 months and I'm trying to see which would be more beneficial for him learning his alphabet.

I purchased this for my son when he was around that same age. The keys were difficult for his little fingers to press and the activities were a bit complex, so I purchased him the leapfrog laptop, which has raised keys, a larger screen, and simpler activities. The alphabet program gives a letter, makes its sound and gives an example of a word that starts with it. When it says, "rrrrrrrr", he always laughs. The tablet is for older kids. My son's 4-year-old cousin was more of the age to enjoy it.
