However it will not read Transmission, ABS Air Bag or Brake codes **Q: Is this the one that you get the codes from the motor under the hood or is this the one for one part of the motor?** A: This code reader is for getting the codes out of the engine control computer that makes the check engine light come on. You have to use the connection under the hood to hook it up, but you will need to operate the ignition switch during the testing/reading so you should also buy the extension cable so you can watch this unit display the codes from inside the vehicle, sitting behind the wheel. It does NOT directly check anything mechanical inside the engine like oil pressure or ignition timing. It only tells if the computer thinks something is not working like an oxygen sensor or other sensors. It also does not monitor engine temperature or speed or if an injector is working or not. I don't believe it can make the check engine light turn off or reset. **Q: do i need to buy anything else in order to read codes?** A: No, A book comes with the code reader and I also bought the plug in cord with the INNOVA.
