It is very good, thanks, I think, to Matt Damon's charm as well as the interesting and plausible story. No bug-eyed monsters, no mysterious technique for travelling faster than the speed of light, no time travel, no space wars. Just a real interesting scientific puzzler, how is this guy going to survive for several years on Mars with just some abandoned equipment and supplies and nine potatoes? Toward the end of the movie they started to leave out things from the book, I guess because the movie might otherwise be too long. I wouldn't have minded, though. One of the things that makes the story plausible is that Matt Damon's character has resilience and a sense of humor, albeit maybe a bit of gallows humor now and then. It could take years for a rescue team to retrieve him, so he gets down to business: rationing and growing food, making water, repairing damaged equipment, and establishing communication with Mission Control. In 3-D, the views are spectacular, with flying debris coming at us from various directions; the desolate yet strangely beautiful Martian terrain stretching out to infinity; the Hermes astronauts floating from one pod to another; and the thrilling, acrobatic finale. "The Martin," is not deep, nuanced, or subtle, but it is a certified crowd pleaser.
